How do you pronounce Hyundai?

We used to say hi-yoon-di but here in Canada it’s pronounced hun-day.
I was just wondering if the UK has changed their pronunciation.
Also interested in how other nations pronounce it.

The advert telling me how to pronounce it and the advert telling me to pronounce Fage both get in my nerves!

jellyfishperiwinkle · 25/03/2025 05:34

I try but forget and just call it Highun-die - not that I have to say it out loud very often. It was pronounced that way in my head for years before I saw the advert.

Bloody love my EV but I'll pronounce it as incorrectly as I like in the UK. Be thankful that I bought your product and STFU.

I think, the company must have approved the original advertising when Hyundai cars started being sold in the UK, with the pronunciation we became accustomed to (Hai - YUN - dai). So why didn't they ensure it was correct at the time?

That (incorrect apparently) pronunciation was not imposed on the company , they commissioned the original adverts. They were OK with it at the time, but now we all have to remember to say it differently, but people have so much to remember already!

Yeah, quite. Good point that it used to be pronounced that way in adverts.

Perhaps London should stamp its feet and get the millions of potential visitors around the world to pronounce it properly and stop misspelling it. Or, you know, it could stay as it is and revel in the diversity of different languages and dialects.

I worked for a Hyundai dealrship for 11 years. Ww always peonounced it Hi
yun Die. I left 6 years ago and i noticed new pronouciation creeping in after that,

Fair enough that the company want a more authentic pronunciation. I know someone who as an adult reverted to their full African name rather than their Anglicised nickname, we’re more culturally aware nowadays aren’t we?

SummerDaysOnTheWay · 25/03/2025 06:30

Hi- yun-die

whitenoisewave · 25/03/2025 06:32

👋hi-yun-die-e

Thanks all.
Like I said, it’s pronounced Hunday on TV here, but as a Brit originally I always feel a bit of a wanker saying Hunday 😂

I have honestly never had to say the word.
Truthfully, how often are you finding this an issue OP?

You obviously dont own one or work in the Motor Industries.

We managed to change our pronunciation of Nestlé so I'm sure we can manage a more authentic pronunciation of Hyundai. I won't ever be swayed on Nougat though

martinisforeveryone · 25/03/2025 12:04

I used to say High-un-dye but the advert's worked and I now mangle it to Hee-yun-day.

Still struggle with Ick-ee-ah though.

evtheria · 25/03/2025 12:04

Hyoon-day for me, no idea what the correct way is.

Snorlaxo · 25/03/2025 12:06

Hyun-day

I remember when Nestlé was pronounced Nessl rather than Ness-lay

mondaytosunday · 25/03/2025 13:12

I think the ads pronounce it Hi yoon day.
