Help! Awful stairgates any ideas please?

Please could I have stairgare recommendations for narrowfit stairgates which ARNT babydan brand. Losing the plot with them as they keep breaking, coming off the wall entirely, coming lose. So unsafe and actually paid a joiner to fit this house move as so worried about 18 month old falling down victorian steep stairs. Had this brand before in my old house- wide fit that time and again ended up breaking/damaged with normal use. Theres got to be another option for narrow staircases?

We had a retractable roller stair gate, mounted on vertical battens on each wall. I can't recall the brand (20 years ago!) Very effective.

Dreambaby Glide and Hide Retractable Gate, White, Up To 140cm Wide, 90cm Tall This sort of thing.

Thanks Hoydenish, will look at the bottom of stairs and see if i could have this either side on the wall and still close door. Might be do-able!
