What's this smell in my kitchen?

Every time I've had the kitchen door shut for a while, when I open it there's a sort of cheesy smell in there.

I've cleaned out the fridge and the bin, but the smell remains. I'm not aware of having spilt milk anywhere, but the floor is mopped regularly anyway. I can't really pull out the fridge or cooker easily to check under them.

Any ideas what it could be and how to get rid of it?

have you a pull out fridge? There is a removable bit down at the back that can get stinky. It’s where that hole at the bottom drips too.

Devianinc · 20/03/2025 23:43

Rotten potatoes or some rotten vegetables that you forgot about

teenmaw · 20/03/2025 23:43

Dead mouse?

Would that make the kitchen smell cheesy though? Do you mean inside the fridge?

They're all kept in the fridge, and there's nothing rotten in there.

Dead mouse?

I've no mice in the flat and my cat doesn't go outside

I bet it’s the drip tray on the fridge. And yes, it can make the whole kitchen smell cheesy!

AdoraBell · 20/03/2025 23:56

Could it be the sink or overflow?

Speedweed · 20/03/2025 23:59

Seconding the sink - google how to remove and clean the plug hole. It's amazing how grim that can smell and is impossible to clean by pouring anything down the sink, it needs to be pulled apart and scrubbed.

Any cheese packaging in your waste bin? Cheese in your food waste?

The drip tray theorists sound much more likely but just trying to think of some alternatives!

Pinkelephant66 · 21/03/2025 00:05

Cheese?

No it’s a drip tray at the back of it. It can get mouldy and smell very bad. The drains is another source of mystery smells.

I had this and a few times! Once was my back door mat, I feed the dog there and the water over time must of dripped on to it and gone manky. I hot washed it and still had to throw it away.

Second time was a box of dog treats (pig snouts bulls cocks lamb danglers etc) that I kept on the side and took me ages to realise it was that.

third time it was onions also kept on the side

fourth was I can't remember but it definitely was something

So I need to pull the fridge out and look behind it at the bottom?

I don't think so. I regularly put soda crystals down the sink. If I sniff the sink it doesn't smell.

No I've emptied them and cleaned them with hot soapy water.

That’s what I do bc I did have a rotting potato once. Omg.

Specso · 21/03/2025 00:40

We had a similar smell in the kitchen once and it was coming from the plug hole in the sink. We put some mr muscle drain stuff down and it solved it. It really smelled like cheese so could very well be that.

Yes - pull it out. You’ll see a drip tray where the hole in the bottom of the inside drips to.

it’s worth doing anyway to be honest.

BreastfeedingWedding · 21/03/2025 01:08

It’s always milk. You just need to find it.

AlexandrinaH · 21/03/2025 01:15

Check your chopping boards and your pastry brush (speaking from experience!).

That's what I thought, but I've no idea where else it could be.
