Cuddly toy recommendations for adults, hear me out

I'm having a horrible time for various reasons and last week in work there was a lovely large cuddly toy for a prop for a show that I ended up crying into. It was actually really comforting, I am rarely held or anything and I just loved the softness, the size (not ridiculously large but it filled my lap and went up to my chin).
I can't get a pet but I could get a cuddly toy. Can anyone recommend one? I don't think I want a weighted blanket, somehow the toy having a face helped 🤣
Does anyone else have a toy for this reason? Never thought I'd be buying soft toys for myself in my mid forties!

For the size you describe I would get a squishmallow

reluctantbrit · 20/03/2025 20:21

I sleep with three, 2 Steiff teddies and one small Red Panda.

Depends what size you want, any larger ones can take up the same space as a small child, so how big is your bed?

Notexactlyasplanned · 20/03/2025 20:24

Awww, that sounds lovely. Agree that squishables are very good for that sort of snuggling that has some bulk behind it, but I’d also look at the bigger jellycats - the large octopus is a gorgeous cuddle imo!

Starryknightcloud · 20/03/2025 20:24

Adults make up a huge percentage of soft toy sales.
Now my LO has stopped co sleeping I quite fancy a squishmallow! Very soft and lots of sizes to get one right for you

Notexactlyasplanned · 20/03/2025 20:25

Sorry you are having a hard time btw, and hope things are smoother for you soon.

angelopal · 20/03/2025 20:25

Also recommend squishmallows. They come in a range of sizes and are comfortable to cuddle.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 20/03/2025 20:25

Look for Hugfun Bear. The one I bought my dd was approx 5ft tall. Big, squishy & soft to touch. I think you can now get them on Amazon.

Kpo58 · 20/03/2025 20:25

I too would choose a squishmellow. My DD has a Pikachu one which would match what you are looking for. Don't buy them online and make sure that you squish them in real life before purchase. The best ones are the ones that are firm otherwise the stuffing may separate inside of them. I think that the 10 or 14 inch squishmellow would be best. Don't get taken for the 20 inch one as they are really poorly stuffed.

I'm not keen on jelly cats as they feel great to begin with, but after 4 months of hugging it will look many years old which is disappointing for such an expensive toy.

TY Beanie Buddies are great to hug. You can find them cheap enough online or in some charity shops, but even after all these years they still look new.

Squishmellows and Beanie Buddies wash really well on a synthetic cycle & low tumble dry. Jelly cats may need a brush afterwards.

Agree that you need to go and try before you buy: if you’re anywhere near London treat yourself to a morning (ideally in the week) at hamleys and try out a load until you find the right cuddle - the wrong texture of level of firmness will be so disappointing so give yourself the opportunity to try a few!

TuddlyCoy · 20/03/2025 20:30

I'd like something that can sort of cuddle me back?!? So arms a definite bonus!

I hanker after a giant Jellycat. They are soft and lovely and heavy. Also very expensive so depends on your budget.

I actually can't find any online just now so am wondering if they might be more of a Christmas special thing.

StMarie4me · 20/03/2025 20:30

I have a build a bear Snoopy. Very comforting.

Is it bad that I love doing this, even with no Intention of buying?

2025willbemytime · 20/03/2025 20:33

I have a teddy that is taller than me. He sits on my bed, sometimes just touching him for a second is comforting. My cat likes to suck him 😂

Greybirdbox · 20/03/2025 20:35

Definitely a jellycat!

Please can I see a photo of him? I'm a big Snoopy fan and live near a Build a Bear.

This panda from IKEA is lovely. Big, soft and can cuddle with it's arms https://www.ikea.com/gb/en/p/djungelskog-soft-toy-panda-80402809/

Edited

Definitely check IKEA!! I have to restrain myself in the toy section every time. Lovely choice of reasonably priced large animals with friendly faces and lots of cuddle potential.

Sinkintotheswamp · 20/03/2025 20:39

A Jellycat Amuseable. Maybe the pancakes or marshmallows.

My daughter has a few and they are adorable.

PeppermintPatty10 · 20/03/2025 20:57

Another vote for going into a shop and trying them out. You need to see which one calls to you!

I hugged one of my DC's stuffed toys while going to sleep and it was so comforting!

Firebird83 · 20/03/2025 21:15

I love Jellycats

FinallyHere · 20/03/2025 23:31

Another vote for IKEA, just brilliant.

picking one will be no problem, they just pick you. Just lovely xx

SmokeyPink · 20/03/2025 23:46

I love Steiff bears, one of the ones I have is made from the softest mohair and I just love to hold her. I don’t very often because I don’t want to get damaged - she mostly lives in glass cabinet.

CassandraWebb · 20/03/2025 23:50

I was at the hospital with my daughter last night and she brought her squishmallow along and me and all the nurses were agreeing how much we want one.

No shame at all in having a cuddly toy or pillow to hug! I reckon most adults have one tucked away. My brother is a talented and successful sportsman and high-flying professional with three kids but his teddy is still in his bedroom Smile
