Anyone had anything similar??! Baffled

Husband went to go on Monday with severe pain on right hand side, literally doubled over agony.
gp sent him straight to surgical ambulatory ward.
here bloods and scans were done.
scan found fatty liver- but drs do not believe this is cause of the pain. Scan found
no gallstones
no kidney problems
no appendix problems
no pancreas problems
nothing showed up on the scan at all other than liver.
bloods came back clear- except elevated liver levels.
husbands symptoms-
coughing up blood
severe pain on right side. Can’t press under right rib or it shoots up into his chest.
any food or drink triggers it
laughing/coughing triggers it
No bowel issues at all all normal.
no reflux issues.

WHAT ON EARTH COULD THIS BE?? we are worried and just baffled so wondering if anyone here at all may of had anything similar.

Stomach ulcer?

Oh really? Are these the symptoms you get with that? I will suggest that to the dr thank you.
I don’t want to be a pain in the ass, with suggesting things etc to them but they are wracking their brains too

Difficult to say but I know someone who was in agony with one, so definitely worth checking if other things have been ruled out.

Catatedog · 21/03/2025 00:34

What tests has he had?

blackbaccara · 21/03/2025 00:47

Has the scan got a good look at the bile ducts? (What can of scan was it?) Has he had bilirubin tested?

528htz · 21/03/2025 09:22

My gallbladder scans always come back normal, but I definitely have attacks if I eat the wrong things and one was so bad I ended up with pancreatitis (discovered via a blood test). The GP told me I probably have a problem with the bile duct. I have fatty liver too.

It'll be the gallbladder and he'll need further investigation. I haven't bothered, I'm just careful with my diet, but I have a constant pain there if I gently press.

Catatedog · 22/03/2025 14:50

Hoping DH is feeling better now.

lobsterkiller · 22/03/2025 16:45

It could be low functioning gallbladder, needs a HIDA scan, so not part of normal tests. Whatever it is I hope they find out for him.

Squigglesandgiggles · 24/03/2025 17:04

Sorry for no reply he’s really not been well hospital have discharged him and have said they have referred for a camera down his throat. He still can’t eat drink or barely stand!!

Hey OP, i’m really sorry to read this.

I’ve also just had a clear ultrasound of my gallbladder with v similar severe pain. My scan showed no gallstones, slightly distended gallbladder, mild fatty liver and my bloods showed that my kidneys were spiking creatinine but none of it to the level anyone really cares so i am now at home wondering what to do next as well. I don’t smoke, drink v little, am overweight but not obese, don’t eat masses of fatty food- I am trying to lose a stone and will keep trying but it’s so very slow.

My pain is transient though, it’s occasional severe attacks and a general low level tenderness. Your poor husband sounds much worse. I hope you get answers soon.

WickWood · 24/03/2025 20:48

I must admit my first thought was gallstones/pancreatitis (I say that as someone who has had both) although I didn't cough up blood. It sounds so frustrating that you still have no answers. I followed a gallstone FB group for a while and a few people had quite severe symptoms but nothing was showing up on the scan either. Does he have any symptoms of jaundice? Pale stools, dark urine, yellowing of the skin and eyes etc. Fatty liver is also common with gallstones.

Really hope you get answers soon and he's feeling better x

It could be low functioning gallbladder, needs a HIDA scan, so not part of normal tests. Whatever it is I hope they find out for him.

Could also be the opposite - overactive gall bladder. DH had his removed last year after about 18 months of pain, tests and scans. No gallstones but eventually the team at the hospital came to the conclusion that his gall bladder was spending so much time clenching and trying to overwork itself it was causing direct and referred muscle pain all over the place.

blackbaccara · 25/03/2025 02:44

Hi OP, is it an ERCP that they are having him in for (camera test)? If so this will look at the bile ducts as well as gallbladder. Do you have a test date yet? Are you at a hospital with specialists in liver/bile duct/gallbladder?
I understand your husband doesn't want to eat but if he does, keep the fat content v v low. Over the counter digestive enzymes taken with food might help (maybe run by his treating medics?) I really hope he gets some relief soon.

BlondiePortz · 25/03/2025 06:10

Ulcer? I am not a doctor but first thing I thought of

Squigglesandgiggles · 01/04/2025 01:38

Hi everyone thank you for the suggestions. We are thinking along the lines of ulcer. His pain got really bad on the 25th and when he went to the loo there was ALOT of blood this happened twice more that day, since then his pain has eased and he is almost back to normal so wtf. I know if I went to the loo and there was that much blood I’d of been straight to A&E. But I think because they discharged him he felt there was no point.

He seems to be almost back to normal! We are still waiting for the camera appointment so I’m hopefully we get answers there. I was honestly shocked that he wouldn’t get seen again I could have throttled him.

He does sound in more pain than I was but my stomach ulcer had me doubled over ( that doesn’t look right written down do you know what I mean?)
