I remember this from travelling in the past however these days I’m more wary…. going to France soon and wondering what to do if hotel asks to photocopy my passport….can this request be refused?
Thanks

It is a legal requirement for hotels in some countries (and France is one) to provide copies of ID for all guests to the local police.
So, if you refuse, I dont think you'll be staying there - they would be breaking the law.

This is very common still. In the last few years of us travelling, every Airbnb host in Spain and Italy has taken a photo on their smartphone of our passports. I think they need them for the town halls as they/we pay a tourist tax for the first 4 nights of our stay. We are currently in Asia and same thing here re photo (but no tourist tax)

Omoleey Norman. We had to leave our passports for 24 hours with reception in Spain last summer, not sure what the rules are in France

Does anyone know if USA hotels take copies of passports or can be legally entitled to see them?

I don’t think you can refuse as the hotel is legally obliged to get it in some places. Why don’t you want them to?
