Firstly - I rang 111 and am waiting a call back from a dr as they were all busy, I absolutely will be taking their advice.

I'm just panicky and come here in case anyone can reassure me or tell me what will happen.

I have recently started adhd medication and usually take a tablet first thing in the morning. I'm in my second week, take 30mg first thing.

I've just taken one now 😬😬. A couple of years ago I took meds at night and I usually take magnesium at night and I went into autopilot.

Its a stimulant. At best it's going to keep me up all night isn't it.

At worst... It's an amphetamine. I'm actually really scared. I'm hoping because it's a starting dose me doubling up won't be dangerous but I'm ready to go to a and E.

I hope I don't have a heart attack or something.

I don't want to Google. I'm scared.

I don't see why you can't work tomorrow, even if you're tired.

I physically won't be able to work if I've been up all night. I won't be with it enough to deliver training. I don't think. I guess I will see.

Yes it is a stimulant but if you have ADHD it shouldn't effect you in that way. For people with ADHD stimulant medication has a calming effect on their brain. The Elvanse will be increasing your dopamine and making you feel more focused.

An extra 30mg is quite a big dose for someone fairly new to the medication but I don't think it would be dangerous.

You might not feel hungry for a while. You might still be able to sleep once you've got over your initial panic about having taken too much.

Do you use Melatonin? That might help you to feel tired.

Stay calm and try to relax.

Thankyou. Whoever said look at the leaflet this is the one emailed to me and it says this... I'm going to wait for 111 rather than A and E as it's not a true overdose as in many tablets and hopefully the other tablets weaning off.

But this is what I'd read when I first started taking it and why I was worried!

"If you take more Elvanse than you should If you take too much medicine, talk to a doctor or call an ambulance straight away. Tell them how much you have taken. Signs of overdose may include: restlessness, shaking, increased uncontrolled movements, muscle twitching, fast breathing, being confused, an inclination to fight or quarrel, seeing, feeling or hearing things that are not real (hallucinations), panicked state, high fever or muscle breakdown. Tiredness a depression may follow. Being or feeling sick, vomiting, diarrhoea and stomach cramps may also occur. Changes in heartbeat (slow, fast or uneven), high or low blood pressure, circulatory collapse, fits and coma may be seen"

I imagine the fits and coma are not for 1 tablet.

I am so much calmer than I was (ha maybe the meds!) and it's so helped seeing everyone's calm posts. Thankyou all.

Yes I was very panicky as soon as I'd taken it as I'd compeltley assumed a night in A and E and that it would do bad things to me and my heart rate etc.

I'm now thinking it will be okay. I can't try and sleep as 111will ring but I'll think of some calm things to do if I can't.

I thought the reason you get given stimulants for ADHD is that they work the opposite than they would on neurotypical people?
So surely if they normally reduce your ADHD symptoms then you are more likely to be extra calm tonight that buzzing?

Ha well yes I do feel much calmer now 😂. Maybe I'll have a calm night of Doing Things 😂.

I general has felt like it's helped me to do things. I think I was getting fatigue from my brain which I have had a break from so I've got so much more done. It feels like it's given me energy but actually the way you say the calm and focus could really have just meant I haven't felt that constant fatigue or inertia.

Its really been helping. I hope I've not messed it up. I've got 2 weeks on this dose and I'm not quite halfway so hopefully that will still give it time to settle.

I'll contact the prescribing person too and let them know.

Ha this reminds me of when I was trying out elvanse for the first time and took it at night, mistaking it for my night time vitamin - and gave my husband one as well! We stayed up for a couple of hours chatting, had quite a nice time, drank some herbal tea and got a reasonable amount of sleep in the end. This was maybe 5 years ago and he still won't take anything I offer him any more - even a haribo gets a raised eyebrow!!
You'll be fine op, go do some ironing if you're feeling productive 🤗

GoldfinchesInTheTree · 11/03/2025 23:35

I assumed an overdose of stimulants would make me buzz as they stop you sleeping don't they.

But yes day to day they have been amazing so far. It's felt like it's given me energy but I have felt clear headed. It's so hard to explain. I've made some really good decisions and it's been like there's not 10000 thoughts going round telling me all the alternative scaneios but my thinking has been clearer. My work friend knows and said I was less anxious and more happy. Im only 2 weeks in so who knows.....

Oooh got interrupted by the Dr ringing. - will update just so people know. She was so so lovely and reassuring.

Non toxic dose - told me what to look for but otherwise check with provider whether to take one tomorrow morning or not.

I normally take it at 6.30 but I don't think I want to. I assume missing one will be okay... I've emailed. My provider but if they say yes it will be after 9.

I will of course do what they say!

Thanks to everyone. I am so so much calmer than my initial panic. I wish I could thank the initial call handler who was so good in my complete panic!

Oh this was just what I needed to read! And that was literally it was about to take magnesium and took this one.

Glad you got some sleep. That's hopeful. I don't want to miss work tomorrow really as its such a pain to reschedule (I am dreaming of a wfh job currently! Oh to be able to log on and just manage after nights like this!)

Your husband giving you raised eyebrows at the haribo made me laugh.

I'm going to tell mine that it could be worse... He could have had it too!!

Final post from me - was up about another hour and then fell asleep. Have to be up 6.30 for the kids but if the alarm hadn't woke me I wouldn't have been awake - so although it wasn't as long as I'd like it was "good" sleep!! About 5.30 hours. The previous 2 nights had been 4-5 hours sleep so I'm running on low but it's okay. I will go to work and crash after.

Thankyou all. I'd had vision of being wired all night and I was so wanting a proper night's sleep I did at least sleep well!!

Everything I was told was to take it before 7am or it might keep me up (probably where some of the worry has come from).

I'm not taking this morning's pill and have emailed my provider. Will restart tomorrow.

I've got the busiest 3weeks I've had at work in over a year with so much in person work it's been such bad timing to be struggling with sleep in general, or messing with medication. Still it will all be worth it. And there is an end in sight with the work.

Thankyou all.

So glad you're still with us and you got some sleep! Good luck with work today, and hope the meds work out brilliantly for you in the future!

GoldfinchesInTheTree · 11/03/2025 22:51

Thankyou all so much. I've claimed down. The fact the gp didn't ring me back straight away has made me realise it's not urgent as well and given me time to clam down.

I was so anxious anyway. 2 shit days at work and hadn't been sleeping and I felt overwhelmed and was just going to bed hoping a good nights sleep would fix some things., I'm an idiot 😬.

Great to hear people's reassurance thankyou.

Realistically it's a stimulant/amphetamine do when it kicks in soon I'm going to be buzzing aren't I. But also tired?? I can't believe people do this for fun.

Stimulants have the opposite effect on ND people than they do on NT people, that’s why they are used to manage adhd behaviours.

GoldfinchesInTheTree · 12/03/2025 08:23

So it seems! I slept so well!

GoldfinchesInTheTree · 12/03/2025 08:25

I feel it does "stimulate" me to To Stuff though. Ie stops some of the crazy billion thoughts in my head so I can concentrate and get stuff done. And I've had more energy in the day.

I'll need to read more to understand this as I was thinking of it in terms of stimulating /stimulant but perhaps it's more that it's calming my brain so I can do things and I have energy because it's not all spent on all the crazy?

Id love to know more. I'm only 1.5 weeks in so it will be my next research rabbit hole when I have some time! Or I'll start a thread at the weekend.

Thankyou.
