Employed garden clearance, job is bigger than he expected

He was very responsive when I first called, came quickly to quote, quoted less than half of the other quote I'd had and started work next day.

TBH I didn't have high hopes but it thought if I got a day's work done it would be a good start for me to get to grips with my once loved but recently neglected garden.

He's been in while I was at work today and has done a great job, but he hasn't got everything he said he would done and wants to come back tomorrow. It's also clear that there's a lot more green waste than he anticipated and I know that costs money to get rid of.

He's been pleasant and professional, hasn't asked for any extra money, but I'm wondering if it would be the decent thing to do to offer it?

Quote was £450, the other quote I had was 1200!! Two men 1.5 days plus waste disposal. I was thinking I'd pay £550/£600 or is paying more than needed just ridiculous?

I like to support good honest hardwork 🙂

Whereabouts are you? £450 sounds a reasonable price for the job. We pay the people we use £250 a day for two of them, we have a very big garden so most jobs take several days anyway. However, we are in the countryside and they dispose of the stuff themselves on their farm which keeps their costs down.

Are you likely to want to use him again in future, in which you might want to offer a bit more as goodwill. TBH having a lovely cleared out garden at this time of year is worth quite a lot!

Have you checked how he is disposing of the waste?

We've used a painter a couple of times. He is great, cheap, and works like a dream.
He is also seriously cheap. I told him to put his prices up after the fist block of work he did for us!
We have overpaid both times. I'd got to sonething starting with a 5 tho. 600 compared to 450 sounds much higher than 575, iyswim!

Yes, I would have paid the higher price, in fact very nearly did, I only backed off and found another quote because the man was slightly difficult to deal with, which gave me a bad feeling.

We're in SE. I think £450 was reasonable for one day, not so much for 2 days plus costs. Although they did see the job beforehand.
