A party 30 years ago

I thought I'd post as this popped into my brain but I always remembered this from my 7th birthday party because even then I thought it was unusual!

I was friends with a twin, let's call her Pam. Pam had a twin brother, let's call him Mick. I was friends with Pam but not Mick. I invited Pam to my small party at home for my birthday, along with a couple of other girls in my class. On the day, Pam was ill, so their mum sent Mick instead of Pam. Was this a bit strange of the mum? Should I have expected to have Mick there too as they are twins?

Obviously, this was so long ago so doesn't matter 😂 but it's always stuck in my brain.

Nope it's weird. Mick shouldn't have gone.

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 10/03/2025 08:36

That was weird and rude.

But the mum saw an opportunity to get the well child out of the house, away from the poorly child, and took it.

I've worded that atrociously but hopefully you understand what I mean.

Very odd. But I find twins are often treated like a unit and not individual people.

BobbyBiscuits · 10/03/2025 08:50

How odd. But maybe Mick thought of himself as your friend by virtue of you coming round his house to see Pam. Maybe you played with him a bit just because he was lingering around?

I hope you didn't exclude him on the day. Did you end up becoming friends with him after that?

I definitely didn't visit their house. Perhaps he did see himself as a friend by default but definitely wasn't included on the invitation.

I could never say whether I included or excluded him on the day at all; I have no other memories of this birthday at all. I'd like to think I was kind - I was a polite, shy child.

I grew out of this friendship by the time I was 8ish when classes were mixed up in the following academic year (my birthday is in the autumn term) and although I went to secondary school with both, we didn't socialise. I haven't seen either in more than 20 years as I don't live in my hometown.

I demand you search for them online and reinstate the friendship, they need to know you remember that day! I'm only joking obviously. It's funny the things we remember though isn't it?

I wonder if he was meant to just drop the present off and go home again (30 years ago even 7 year olds would be out and about on their own) 😂😂
He somehow ended up stuck at a party with a bunch of girls 😁

getlostgetloose · 10/03/2025 11:49

@BobbyBiscuits yes! Such a minor thing but has stuck in my brain and popped into my head at random this morning 😂. They were (are, I'm sure) both really intelligent. I do happen to know what their professions are and they've done well for themselves.

@Needmorelego perhaps! Maybe Pam was sent to spend the night with a grandparent and the parents shipped Mick off too in order to have some festive afternoon delight 😂.
