What time does your 6 yo go to bed and wake up?

We go up round 7, he's asleep by 8, and sleeps until 7:30 a.m.

We've made plans with a friend and asked them to bring their DD over to ours so we can travel together. We asked them to be here at 10:00 a.m. and her parents said "oh, you're early risers? I guess we can miss a lie-in." Are there really 6 year olds who are sleeping past 10 on a weekend??

Yes ours is a similar routine to you. Maybe they mean the parents take it in turns to get up with their DC?

tentimesover · 08/03/2025 21:37

Getting to yours at 10 would include them travelling to you, all getting up and ready, breakfast etc which could easily take 2 hours so lie in to them could be 8 or 9

Much the same as hours. Bed by 8, awake somewhere around 7

@tentimesover they're walking distance from us, literally no more than ten minutes away!

I would give my right arm for a half seven start if it helps!

Ihaveoflate · 08/03/2025 21:45

My 5 1/2 yo only ever sleeps past 7am when she's ill. Usually she's asleep around 7:30pm and awake before 6:30am.

However, at the weekend we slack around in the morning and often don't get dressed much before 10am despite having been awake for hours.

Jk987 · 08/03/2025 21:46

It doesn't mean they're still asleep at 10 but could be a push to be up and ready by then.

Adhikv · 08/03/2025 21:47

Are you sure they meant that their 6 year old sleeps until then? Perhaps they meant one of them does? Or that as a family they like lazy mornings?

Cheersmedears123 · 08/03/2025 21:48

Similar here. We might do an 8/8.30 bedtime at the weekend to get a 7.30am wake up, but in the week it’s more like 6.30am. That seems normal from talking to other parents.

We are very slow on the weekends though! Maybe they weren’t referring to the kids? 10am is usually when we’re having breakfast together and are unlikely to be out of our PJs. We can definitely be out if we have something planned, but we prefer to be a bit lazy. Weekday mornings are such a blurry rush so it’s nice to do the opposite when we can.

podirnot · 08/03/2025 21:49

Bath 6:40, bedroom 7 for reading and talking, asleep by 8. Up at 6/6:30

BendingSpoons · 08/03/2025 21:49

In bed around 7.30. Reads as long as he wants, usually to between 8 and 8.30. Awake by 6.45ish.

Sunday is a slower morning, where DC get up together and watch TV. We get up around 8/8.30. I would not find 10am an early start. But some people are keen to chill in pyjamas etc even if they are awake.

moose17 · 08/03/2025 21:52

7:30pm bed sleep by 7:45pm wake up around 7-7:15am

GloriousBlue · 08/03/2025 21:56

Asleep about 8pm, awake about 6.30am.

However, I'm up all night with the baby so wouldn't be keen on 10am plans. It's DH who does mornings on weekends!

bedtim · 08/03/2025 22:08

@GloriousBlue we also have a 2 yo who's getting molars so we're up with her at 5:45 these days 😴 But the friend is the youngest (she's nearly 7) and has a half brother who's 14, perhaps that influences the family rhythm.

We're very similar, DS goes to bed at seven usually asleep before 7:30 up around 7:30am, 7-7:30 in the week depending on where DH and I are for work, his school has a soft start 8:30-8:50 so we're either there at 8:25 ready to dash off or around 8:45 if I've of us is working locally. He went to bed at 7:45 tonight because my dad was visiting and by that time he was a bit of a mess, hyper and a bit emotional. Hopefully he'll sleep until at least 8 in the morning, I don't think he's ever slept later than 8:30am. Other school parents tell me I'm lucky because theirs are nearly all up anytime between 5:45 and 6:30 , so I'm very surprised at a six year old sleeping until 10am.

Picklepower · 08/03/2025 22:14

She's in bed at 8 but can often be up until 9/9.30. we wake her between 7.30-8 on school days and she sleeps til 8-8.30 on weekends.

Honestly we do find getting places early on weekends a chore. A 10am bday party the other week was a pain.

Pe1ican · 08/03/2025 22:15

bed at 8.30, usually asleep by 9 and then up by 6 at the latest

mindutopia · 08/03/2025 22:36

I have a just 7 year old. Usually asleep by 9-9:30pm and wakes usually 6:30-7:30am.

I suspect what they mean is they don’t want to get up and be out the door at 10am. I didn’t actually get out of bed until 9:30am today despite my 7 year old waking at 7:30. He’s perfectly capable of playing in his room, going downstairs when he’s ready, putting the tv on, getting some milk and eating a banana until one of us gets up with him. The other day he made himself a bowl of cereal and tidied up his breakfast stuff before we came down. I would certainly get up to meet a friend though if we had plans.

Kokomjolk · 08/03/2025 23:26

You can be awake at x o'clock, but you still have to get everyone dressed, possibly shower, eat breakfast, probably have a cup of tea/coffee, etc.

My 7 year old tends to wake between 8 and 9 at the weekend (he is in bed at 9 pm, we're usually still having dinner at 7), but I'd want a while to actually get up before I left the house. I wouldn't leap out of bed and get right out the door unless I was going to the airport or something.

I think 10 is rather early for a social engagement at the weekend - we don't let ours go and knock for their friends until it's after 10.30.

CoodleMoodle · 08/03/2025 23:30

My nearly 7yo goes up around 7:15pm, has a couple of chapters with one of us and then a couple of chapters of his own book by himself, and lights off at about 7:40pm. He's usually asleep by 8pm (sometimes still awake when DD comes up at 8 but not always).

He wakes up at 7am most days, and reads in bed until 7:30am.

podirnot · 09/06/2025 17:52

bath at 7, reading then he is asleep by 8pm. Wakes between 6am and 6:30am

Peanut91 · 09/06/2025 18:33

6yr old goes to bed about 7:15 during the week but it is up at 5.30am as he has to do a lengthy medical procedure before we leave for school at 8am. At the weekend and school holidays we let him stay up until about 8pm so he is up later but given how hectic our weekday mornings are we often have a very lazy weekend morning and so not ready to get out and about until about mid morning
