Is the only option to go on the coastliner to Scarborough ? Do you know how much this costs ?

or how much is the train ?

No idea about the bus but this is an open return on the train for one adult. This is on Trainline though, cheaper on there than buying at the station.

Oh, thank you, it’s faster than I thought

Bus to whitby or Robin Hoods bay instead of Scarborough. I think it's £2 or 3 each way. I'm sure you could do Bridlington or Filey as well. There's also a possible train route to saltburn.

DontbesuchanarseGlenda · 06/03/2025 18:42

Sorry op, image currently under review. Was £17.90

Is google broken for you?

GeorgiesCat · 06/03/2025 18:47

Just thought I’d ask locals that know, already googled before posting

Not sure if there’s a direct bus to Bridlington these days. The train is certainly quicker and cheaper to Scarborough. Scarborough is a great bucket and spade beach for the kids, but if it’s adults going then Bridlington south beach is sandy but much longer, you can walk and walk and walk…

From York if you want a further afield trip you can get the train to Newcastle and then the metro to South Shields. Beach a-go-go!

from £10 apparently (plus the metro charge)

The Coastliner bus looks good - it's cheap but it's going to take a while. It's certainly popular.

There does appear to be a train from York to Bridlington. I never knew that!!

EllieQ · 06/03/2025 19:01

The Coastliner buses run from York to Scarborough or Whitby, and at the moment bus fares are capped at £3. However the buses can get very busy especially at weekends! The train to Scarborough is quicker than the bus. I’m sure I’ve seen an open-top tour bus in Scarborough, but it might be summer season only.

You can get a direct train from
York to Bridlington, but it goes via Hull so takes about two hours. There are also trains from Scarborough to Filey and Bridlington.

Best train price search is Scotrail apparently because it shows split ticket prices and doesn't charge a booking fee like trainline.com.

Often an off peak day return as long as you don't travel before about 9.30 am on a weekday is no more expensive than advance singles and has the advantage that you can use any train.

I've been a few places on trains recently and it's often cost less than I thought. Still have to be lucky to go to London without eye watering cost although I suppose it is a long way on a fast train.

DontbesuchanarseGlenda · 06/03/2025 19:07

@cakeorwine there is. They were reintroduced a couple of years ago. And then I think the direct buses stopped, apparently we can only have one or the other 😁
I believe these days that York-Beverley then Beverley-Bridlington is the best bus option.

DontbesuchanarseGlenda · 06/03/2025 19:10

Didn’t know about Scotrail, thanks @Bjorkdidit

I love these kind of threads. So much more interesting than Google - and more reliable usually.

I'm on a train, it's dark and rainy and I'm hundreds of miles away from York but I'm picturing happy buses full of people going to walk on the beach for miles and miles at Bridlington. Thank you for not just googling, OP 😊

You can get to Filey by taking the train to Seamer then changing. We like to kayak in the rowing lake or you could hire a pedal. There is also a little splash pool on the front and an ice cream hut which has gluten free cones.

Oh that’s a fun idea, I wouldn’t have thought of

The Coast Liner advertises itself as the best bus trip in Britain. Or England.

Never done it as I have a car but it looks popular for a day trip out.

Thank you everyone and OP. Not long moved to York and this is really useful!
