Spasms in left rib IBS??

Irritablebloodybowel · 02/03/2025 09:31

I've started having lots of of ibs symptoms. Which were mainly right sided. Urgency, bloating excessive gas etc..

Yesterday afternoon I went out to eat had a small full English. Since I ate that meal I am getting a spasm feeling under my ribs. I'm bloated and have gas. It's been almost 24 hours and this spasm feeling is not going.

Is this ibs too? It also Is making me anxious. The sensation is almost like when a baby is moving around ( I am not pregnant, on the pill and peri age)

Sounds more like a gall bladder issue caused by fatty foods.

Irritablebloodybowel · 02/03/2025 09:37

I saw a consultant last week as I have been getting right sided issues and other than having a polyp in my gallbladder he said ibs.

This is on my left side. It's constantly spasmimg and isn't painful.

Left side + rib cage makes me think it's more of a stomach issue than IBS.

It isn't painful but the sensation feels so strange. Like in my left rib cage is full of gas. In one area.
I've had a lot of stress and anxiety lately and don't know if that's been a trigger. It didn't start until after I had eaten though??

It's like a feeling of pressure building up then I may get some wind.

Trapped gas can cause that kind of feeling if it’s high. Try some boiled water. But sadly you should probably stop eating full English breakfasts by the sound of things. I have similar and black pudding or sausage are definitely triggers.

mindutopia · 02/03/2025 09:46

I get spasms in my bowels sometimes (your bowel does come up surprisingly high). I don’t have IBS. That said, eating a full English, even a small one, would probably do me in for a few days. Did you drink any alcohol? That would definitely compound it all. What’s your diet like normally?

Irritablebloodybowel · 02/03/2025 09:51

I have been eating really well for the last few weeks. But yesterday we had a family day out and I stupidly thought I would be ok. I had drunk alcohol
The night before as well.

I'm drinking boiled water now. All last night it was spasmimg and building up. I thought this morning it would have gone off but it is just the same. I can only describe it as the feeling of a baby's elbow under my rib? Then it goes off for a little while then starts up. I'm also constipated this morning.

I'm going to get some Colpermin tablets today to see if that helps, I took a Buscopan yesterday but it didn't do a thing.

I'm still having the same issue, can't get to see a GP until next week. Peppermint tea has helped a little but I still keep getting the spasm feeling, when I press my stomach I can feel it moving. Sometimes the way I'm sat seems to set it off.

hi @Irritablebloodybowel , I hope you are well. Did you manage to resolve this? I have ibs and usually suffer pains spasms especially on the left side. I am currently having similar issue like you explained but this has gotten worse the past few days...very windy and pain and discomfort on left side and under ribs...I tend to have ibs c (constipation). Right now stomach making horrible sounds more like left side and oh the horrible movements. I literally get bulges and tenderness the left side until it eventually eases which can be days or weeks😭😭😭

Irritablebloodybowel · 26/04/2025 10:02

The spasm feeling stopped after a week or so. And my issues settled down.

I have woken up this morning though with anxiety upset stomach and wind. I've also got anxiety. Not sure if the anxiety is causing the upset stomach or the upset stomach is causing the anxiety.

Ive had about 5 months free of the annoying feeling under my left rib. But it's started up again in the last day or so.
I can feel gas under my rib again and can feel it moving around in there.

I had a food intolerance test a few months ago and it showed I was yeast intolerant. So I have cut out yeast as much as I can. However, over the weekend I've eaten bread on three occasions and now this has started back up again!

Im in no pain at all with it just very windy. I've bought some Fybro calm wind relief capsules as they seemed to help me before.

I haven't seen a GP about it but I'm wondering if I should or if it is connected to eating bread.

Hiatus Hernia? You'd need an endoscopy to confirm.

I never thought of that? I've been to the GP many times in the last year with digestive issues and I've always been told
IBS. I haven't been to the GP with this issue though.

Im more inclined to think it's because I've had lots of bread over the last few days and my body doesn't like it.

Hernias can cause loads of symptoms from gas and bloating, to diarrhoea or constipation and stranger symptoms like arm pain, palpitations, iron deficiency anemia and night sweats. Bread can also exacerbate symptoms, as can fat. Might be worth an ask?

Coconutter24 · 04/08/2025 20:42

Have you been constipated? I have ibs and if I don’t go for a day or two I have the exact same feeling

Fen476 · 04/08/2025 20:44

I get this every now and then - it goes away when I burp or fart! I have IBS and assume it's related. I can't eat alliums -onion/garlic/leek.

Since I've cut out yeast my symptoms have pretty much stopped. I have eaten more bread in the last week than I have realised.

I think another trip to my GP may be in order as I do get heartburn, palpitations, constipation and diarrhoea.

It's worse when seated a certain way on the settee or driving.

No I'm definitely not constipated at the moment.

I haven't had this in months. Last time it lasted about a week before it stopped.
It's worse after eating. It does go away when I pass wind but I can almost immediately feel it building back up. If I press on the area I feel it move again then I pass wind!

Definitely sounds like it’s something related to ibs. I always get weird feelings like this more so when I’m constipated but even when I’m not

Irritablebloodybowel · 19/08/2025 17:14

So I'm still having excess gas under my left rib and across the top of my stomach. I spoke to a nurse practitioner who has told me to carry on with the Fybrocalm tablets and drink peppermint tea. I have to put a stool sample in to check I haven't got IBD and the IBS is masking it.

OP posts:
Irritablebloodybowel · 01/09/2025 09:51

It seems I have H Pylori. I've just had an abnormal result from a stool sample. I've had this before and had totally different symptoms to what I have now.

I'm glad they've found out what's happening. Have you spoken to the IBS team or GP on a plan for treatment? How are you feeling as a whole.

Irritablebloodybowel · 01/09/2025 19:48

No my doctors office called today to tell me a prescription was ready for me to pick up. Two lots of antibiotics and Lansoprazole to take. I'm hoping it works and stops the constant movement under my rib.
The last time I tested positive for H. Pylori I had a constant ache under my right rib.

I feel ok in myself. I've just been putting up with these symptoms for ages so I'm hoping it stops once the treatment starts.
