Eastenders tiny details ponderings

Why do all the glam women who don’t ever go to the gym , wear heels and dresses to pop to the minute mart etc seem to have a wardrobe of extremely plain tracksuits for when their is a time of trauma? Like - what possesses them to buy it , because they are extremely plain tracksuits ( grey jumper, grey bottoms ) and these women wouldn’t ever wear them , so do they see them and think “ husband death vibes “ and buy them just in case ?

Who does Sharon’s lashes ? Because a pub fell on her and not one was missing .

What happened to GDPR ? Bianca answered the phone and within seconds she was being told about Reid’s’ body . No one asked who she was ?

Who is the mobile nail tech? Cindy was in hospital for weeks and yet not a single bit of growth on her nails ?

Why , when they have a quickie - that is then instantly regretted and talked about as a moment of madness - do they take the time to move up to the bedroom , making it actually more thought out and not a quickie ?? Like Sharon and Grant were tearing each others clothes off in the kitchen but then clearly just stopped and headed upstairs to carry on ?

Where does their money come from ? Everyone goes to the cafe to get coffees , yet they live literally on the doorstep . They walk from their house , 2 min to the cafe , and get a takeaway coffee . Every day. Half of them don’t have washing machines and just go to the launderette .

Who are all the people walking around and parked / driving when we know who lives in all the houses ?

Where do they do their big shop ? We see them with bags from the minute Mart but where do they do their big shop ? Why don’t we ever see them unloading their shopping ?

Why does no one work outside of the square , except Sonia?

Come and join us over on the Telly addicts ' spoilers ' thread for EE!!
We often ponder many of these questions and more.
I will admit that your questions are valid and I often wonder why the writers do so little homework for how things work in the real world sometimes.

ChonkyRabbit · 27/02/2025 21:14

Because if all that stuff was changed to be realistic, it would be boring as fuck. I want to see a husband finding out his wife is pregnant with triplets and two of them are his and one is his dead brother's, not someone unloading shopping.

Yes I completely agree it’s definitely more exciting !!

But I do ponder 🤔

I think that’s where I belong !

Sonia was a nurse in the Panasars curiously empty GP surgery once. On the square ..
She isn't working at the moment, on mat leave I suppose !

Wildflowers99 · 27/02/2025 21:27

Haha! Great summary which made me laugh. Here are my observations:

  1. How can a market stall trader live in the same value house as the local notorious crime family? Why be a gangster only to live in the same kind of house as Martin who sells cucumbers?
  2. Equally the houses are Victorian terraces in London in a nice square with easy access to a tube station. They must be worth at least £800k each. Given none of them ever seem to be at work, how do they afford it?
  3. How the heck do families like Stacy’s all fit in the house? Stacy, Jean, Jean’s boyfriend, her 2/3 kids, Martin when he was around, Lily’s daughter… all in 3/4 bedrooms apparently
  4. Why does Grant never phone in advance before turning up?
  5. They seem to move abroad at the drop of a hat despite being laughably unlikely to get a visa wherever it is they’re going
  6. Parents of small children never seem to know where they are, or be looking after them (looking at you Sharon)
  7. Do they not get concerned they’ll accidentally sleep with a relative given the square is so enmeshed at this point?

I kinda wanna see them unloading shopping 😭😭😭😭

Just the normal lives of the residents sometimes

It's best to put your own brain to one side and just enjoy some good acting and silly storylines
I do love it still and a big fan, but I do also laugh at it too. Characters like Phil I do like a lot.
I would miss it if it was axed!

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 27/02/2025 21:37

@Wildflowers99 Wait a minute, 'Lily's DAUGHTER'?! As in Stacy's granddaughter?!! I stopped watching Eastenders around Lily being born. Please don't tell me she has a child of her own now!

OnarealhorseIride · 27/02/2025 21:47

I have not watched this for 20 years but these are all valid questions. Are the allotments still there? 20 years ago it was clear to me that no big shop was needed due being self sufficient living on home grown veg. I am confident that should a zombie apocalypse occur then the Albert Square camp would do well.

Fizbosshoes · 27/02/2025 21:53

I haven't watched eastenders since 2011, but I wondered a lot of the same things as @Wildflowers99
a) why literally no one had their own washing machine
b) how massive extended families with new members arriving all the time, fitted into the house. Where do they all sleep?
c) how nearly every woman between the age of 20 and 60 had slept with Phil Mitchell, or Ian Beale, or both?

Hollytreenew · 27/02/2025 21:57

I’ve always wondered some of those questions too!

One thing I always notice watching it is that they say ‘family’ in every episode at least once, that I have seen anyway. I’ll probably watch one now next week that it doesn’t say it in!

ChristmasPudd1990 · 27/02/2025 21:59

Everyone always has shoes on indoors, even stranger when it's high heels. I don't think anyone owns a pair of slippers...

Annaannaannab · 27/02/2025 22:01

I love that I’m not alone in my ponderings!

Totally agree about a market trader and a notorious crime family having similar houses !

similar to that … why would someone like Phil , with all his money , choose to live in a small house with no garden and not even a driveway??

As for the size of houses that always gets me ! In the Vic you have Linda - who we know has the master bedroom and doesn’t share it with Ollie and Annie, then there’s Gina , Anna , George , Elaine and Johnny ! Even if the kids share and Anna and Gina share that’s 4 bedrooms and where does Johnny sleep ? On the sofa or is it 5 beds ? And where are these bedrooms , because at the top of the stairs there is no way there are 4/5 doors plus the 3 doors for the kitchen , bathroom and living room ?!

I stopped watching it when they started shoe horning all the Brannings into it. Maybe about ten years ago?

It dealt with issues very well at the beginning - teen pregnancy, rape (Wilmott-Brown!), Arthur’s sad breakdown, HIV, homophobia.

The divorce papers Christmas Day storyline! I was reminded of that when everyone was talking about Gavin & Stacey last Christmas Day. If social media had existed back then it would’ve exploded.

But those questions of yours have never been answered OP!

Do they still go “up west” periodically?

Thursa · 27/02/2025 22:11

Why does everyone seem to have everyone on the square’s mobile number in their phone?

Why do so few people come back for weddings, christenings and funerals?

The ordering of food and drink in bars and the cafe and walking out leaving it untouched, who can afford to be so wasteful?

Clearly empty takeaway cups, can they at least put water in them?

getthosetitsup · 27/02/2025 22:12

I do have an inking how they all fit in the Slaters.

Jean and Harvey are in the downstairs back room (I guess what would otherwise be the dining room) .

Alfie had an iffy loft conversion done when he lived there. I'm surprised the usually savvy Panesars never questioned the lack of building regulations for that when they bought the house.

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2025 22:19

The EastEnders kiddie closet is the eternal soap question...

RedToothBrush · 27/02/2025 22:21

How the fuck did Phil manage to get a none compulsory section bed so easily? I mean the mental health doctor came out on emergency call out! Like really?!

She does indeed , Lily and Ricky , their DD is Charli ( not after Uncle Charlie Slater , after Charli XCX)

They live within spitting distance of the Tube but no-one works outside if the Square ,
If someone <gasp> meets a partner outside of Albert Square they will be related to someone .

The Slaters have a garage and a loft conversion so their house does have more space (though if this was real the owners would have a double storey side extension, rear extension and dormer loft extension before you could say Planning Permission )

Houses /flats always appear as needed

People buy their clothes off the market , even though they do venture Up west

If you split up with your partner , move onto to their brother/nephew/dad/ or sister/daughter )

Walk past your perfectly functional kettle and buy a cup of stewed tea in the cafe
