Anyone else overwhelmed by work and sitting working this evening?

Hi all,

just wondering whether there’s anyone else in the same boat?

I’m so overwhelmed with work and currently sitting working in the house.

Working late like this makes me feel anxious and as though I’m drowning. I’ve got a low level panicky feeling.

Anyone after some company?

This used to be me before I left teaching. 7.30 to 10 at the kitchen table, plus Saturday afternoons and most of Sunday. Christmas was the only ‘free’ holiday as Easter was coursework marking and Summer was writing new lesson plans for the latest educational fad. Coming from a teaching family it was only when my children entered different professions that I realised it wasn’t the norm.
Main advice, don’t eat a packet of biscuits mindlessly and drink endless cups of coffee or you’ll be up at 3 tweaking ideas - and be told by your headteacher that they find they do their best work at that time.
Sorry, seems your post was a bit triggering!

Yes I've been like this lately too. It's not a nice feeling.

cruisingwater · 27/02/2025 20:47

Hey 👋 I'm not working now but have been where you are many times. I'm always thinking about work.
I tend to get up 05:30/6am when really need to get work done - gives me an hour before rest of house up. Hate sacrificing sleep but often do.
Basically life is kids, work, then weekend too knackered to do anything.
Good luck with the slog, hope you can get where you need to tonight, then try and relax and do something nice this weekend x

Motheranddaughter · 27/02/2025 20:50

Worked until 8.00 pm
No real alternative 🤷‍♀️

78Summer · 27/02/2025 20:53

I was the the same tonight. Working at home only just logged off. Sending sympathies.

Yellowcircle90 · 27/02/2025 20:53

Thanks everyone. I’ve decided to pack it in for tonight and have set my alarm for early in the morning. I’m so much more productive first thing. I’m at my least effective in the evenings. This is the downside of working part time. The contracted hours and pay are less but the workload still heavy

What industry are you all in that requires extra hours outside of work?

LittleRedRidingHoody · 27/02/2025 20:55

Not only am I working, but I'm also on camera in a 3 hour planning meeting that does not effect me or my team in the slightest. The joys of working for a US-based company 'flexibly'.

Marisislikethesunwithoutthewarmth · 27/02/2025 20:55

not me but my other half teaches at the university and is constantly working into the late evenings trying to play catch up.

it’s a perfect storm of taking on the work of lazy staff, dealing with the management team’s ever increasing expectations to “satisfy” the students, having to get more and more involved in pastoral care on top of teaching, planning and academic research.

DC is upset because daddy hasn’t been around much today for their birthday but he is just so caught between a rock and a hard place.

he will be up at 4/5 am again tomorrow to cram some work in before the teaching day begins.

Nope, I don't work any extra hours I'm not paid for

Healthcare

As in you are a doctor or nurse or similar?

Notmydaughteryoubitch · 27/02/2025 21:02

This was me for years, used to 60-70 hour weeks pretty much every week until I crashed and burnt out and had to take 5 months off. I am still in same line of work but took a step down from senior management role and am so much more boundaried these days, will only work till 6pm. The work I do is important but I can't do it if I don't look after myself.

FrothyCothy · 27/02/2025 21:03

Worked til after midnight last night and 8PM tonight. I leave in a couple of weeks and cannot wait 😆

Same. Or I make sure I take them back as TOIL. I'm not a robot.

DiscoDown18 · 27/02/2025 21:31

I left the office at 6.30pm and am working again now. Some weeks are just like this.

ProbableDoris · 27/02/2025 21:35

I’m overwhelmed at work but I’m fucked if I’m working late to try to keep up. That way lies burnout. They have enough of my restless brain at 4am as it is.

Acinonyx2 · 27/02/2025 21:54

Anther uni teacher. During term time I preferentially work weekends to keep up (pretty much both days every weekend) - and add evenings when absolutely necessary. I'm in mid-term overwhelm right now. But things calm down outside terms and marking season. I couldn't cope with working like this otherwise and also helps that my own dc is older and at uni. Hope you get some calmer stretches at least.

Same. I learnt my lesson the hard way.

tigerbear · 27/02/2025 22:09

Yup. For a month, I’ve been doing 7am til at least 9-10pm, plus weekends. I’m self employed, and the expectations of clients is just unreal at the moment. I’m exhausted, low level depressed, and I look like crap 🥺😩

ZenNudist · 27/02/2025 22:13

Just finished work around feeding dc and taking one to scouts I've worked from 9am to 10pm.

I'm OK with it. I have an important deadline tomorrow. Off to Wales so early dart at 4 tomorrow! Hopefully get everything done.
