Happy to stay a few stops away

I just want a bed for a few nights. I don't have a budget as such but at the same time I don't want to spend silly money

Look up the premier inns. Close by like Holborn will be more expensive than a little further away like Old Street or Tower Hill. I stayed in the Hampstead one recently that was an easy bus ride.
The ones called Hubs are smaller rooms and I wouldn't recommend but they are cheaper.
