Anyone else dislike buying cars?

Need a new car?
You seem to need a high level spreadsheet, a degree in hybrid/fossil fuel mechanics and an encyclopedic knowledge of market trends. Let alone running the gauntlet of bartering with a dealership.

I just want one that drives and is cheap. Anyone else feel the same?

Solidarity!

Why do you need all that? We spent about 20 minutes on the internet looking at cars at local dealerships. Identified one we thought we'd like, went and test-drove it and bought it. It's great Smile

This is why I used Heycar (online broker similar to Cinch). What you see is what you get, if there are any cosmetic defects they tell you about it. No bartering. And you’ve got 10 days to return it if you’re not happy with it (which I’ve done on a previous occasion, and it was very straightforward).

The time before that I used a branded dealership, was patronised by a young salesman who didn’t even know what model we were test driving, and given incorrect information about what was included in the deal. Plus a hard sell on extra warranties etc. Internet buying is much, much simpler.

Hate hate hate it,

When I need a new one I just ask my mechanic to get me one and bring it round I don't care what it is as long as I can afford it.

Theunamedcat · 21/02/2025 18:21

Took me nearly 2 years to buy a new (to me) car I'm not entirely happy with it but it's mine now

Justkeepingplatesspinning · 21/02/2025 18:21

A lot of it depends on the dealership. I used to have an awful time with slimy men trying to sell me the latest model etc etc.
I've had a better experience since I moved town and the dealership staff here don't seem to have been to the same awful training place!

This is what I'm worried about....so many models and types and who knows if I'll even like the one I get.

Yes me, hate it and so only get a new car every ten years or so.
I don't want loads of fancy stuff I don't want, don't need and adds nothing to my life. I just want a car that goes from point A to point B.
And as for dealerships, I remember I went to one years ago and the dealer wouldn't even tell me how much the bloody car I was looking at was. He said I had to decide if I wanted it or not first and then we'd sit down and make a deal! WTF!

Sonolanona · 21/02/2025 19:04

Yep. Just changed my car a month ago.
I miss my old one, I don't like my new one, and that was after a reasonable amount of research... a quick test drive did not show me how much it would annoy me. It's not even very fancy but I miss my old really basic car! Now I'm stuck with it :(

Gloriousgardener11 · 21/02/2025 19:08

Yes I absolutely agree with you.
I bought my car 11 years ago and it took some time to research the best one for my needs.
The thought of having to go through that boring, mind numbing experience again has made me keep it for now but I know at some stage I’ll have to bite the bullet.

Bringmeahigherlove · 21/02/2025 19:11

Me! Just been through the rigmarole again. I feel like I have to prove I am not stupid before being taken seriously. Can’t help feeling every time that it would be different if I was a man.

elastamum · 21/02/2025 19:14

This is why I buy a Volvo, and when it starts to break, usually after at least 15 years of driving I buy another one. The current one is 13 years old and still going strong.

tobee · 21/02/2025 19:47

I love buying a car!

Don't do it very often. But I love cars altogether really

rosyvalentine · 21/02/2025 23:15

I love, love, love buying a new car! To be fair though, I always know what car I want before I buy it.

Ihatemondays1962 · 21/02/2025 23:20

I live buying cars too. If you give more details people might be able to give some recommendations - price range, rough size etc

DramaAlpaca · 21/02/2025 23:28

I like buying cars, always used ones. I do my research first, decide what I want then look around for the lowest mileage version I can find reasonably local to me. Then I arrange a test drive at the dealership and if I like it we get to the best bit - haggling. I love a good haggle and I'm very good at walking away if I don't get the deal I want.

IncaAztec · 22/02/2025 13:36

Also, forgot to add another twist, when they don't seem to have the car you want locally and suggest a random 100 mile drive to look at one.
