Inspire me with ways to improve my immune system!

I'm currently on cold number 6 since October and utterly fed up with being constantly ill.I work in a school teaching 2/3 mornings a week across the school. I also private tutor, 25 kids a week. So... that's a lot of different children and germs! Most of my tutoring parents are pretty good about requesting online sessions if their children are really coldy (I ask them to do this) but some just ignore me and send them regardless then pretend theyve misunderstood/forgotten. I can't really avoid germy children at school either other than opening windows where possible. What can I do to help build up my immune system? I feel like I'm just lurching from one cold to the next and I'm exhausted.

Have you had your Vitamin D levels checked?

Are you part of the BAME community, like myself, so by defaukt I take 10,000IU a day and noticed my sickness rate dropped after 3 months of taking it. Also severity is shorter. Before i was checked my lveels were 20 and that's was in the summer!!! Healthy leveka are 70 - 110. I was at risk of suicide, obesity, bone cancer, depression and a whole host of other awful diseases.
The 400IU the government states is nothing especially in the winter and especially if you are from the BAME community.

I take Vitamin D and have some calcium and fatty foods such as Milk with it. Helps with max absorption. Dr John Campbell is fantastic anf has loads of information of Vit D. Also Dr Berg. They both have YT channels.

Thank you!

I'm caucasian but I've got a history of low folate and vit D levels following years of terrible periods caised by fibroids, anaemia and eventually a hysterectomy back in 2021. I was prescribes courses of high strength Vit D and Folic acid. I wonder if I need to get them retested.

@Sarahbackinthesaddle what strength Vit D did you take?

I'm currently awaiting blood tests as the Dr thinks I've got some type of arthopathy triggered by all the viruses too. I'm hoping she's put folate and Vit D on the test also.

I guess I should wait until I've had the blood taken before I start dosing up, incase it affects the results.

If you can get your bloods tested (I know this can be hard) then this may help. I had mine tested as similar symptoms and just no energy at all. My iron was very low so have been taking an iron and a vitamin d supplement but also really trying to improve my diet. This seems to have helped.

I got the spray one which has k2 too as that helps it absorb. It's not a particularly high dose but Mumsnet told me that under tongue absorbs better and it did do the trick. I now take a high (just supermarket high not prescribed high) tablet every so often when I remember

When my mum used to tutor at home she opened the window after each child, and used a spray to kill the germs if they'd been noticeably sniffy. Can't remember the name of the spray, keep thinking antiseptic, it isn't that, but one of those which kills 99% of germs, on door handles and the plastic table cloth. Good luck

Vitamin D here as well. Take a boots own pill daily and get far fewer colds than I used to. I also quit smoking and became a health weight which I think helped. However DH doesn’t take Vit D and gets more colds than me so make of that what you will!

eatsleeptutor · 19/02/2025 07:44

Thanks everyone, I've dug out my vitamin D tablets - realised I had some lurking. I'll give it a try.

I do use one of those nasal sprays when I think I've been exposed to colds etc but I'm never sure if it helps. I also dettol my tuition room regularly and always have a window open, but there's only so much you can do when mixing with lots of different children.

I think I'm just very run down to be honest. DH is off work sick after surgeries so I've been doing a lot of extra hours tutoring and at school.
