Car and insurance for 17 year old?

Can anyone help with this please?

DS is just about to turn 17 so we are looking at lessons for him. We also need to look at a car he can drive with us to practice when not having lessons. He can’t drive mine as I have an automatic (full licence though) and DH has a company car. We are looking at buying a cheap 1 litre.

Do we buy the car in say DH name and have a new insurance policy with DS as a named learner driver until he passes his test then transfer the car to him and get him his own insurance policy? Not sure about the best way to do this given our own car set up. Any advice helpful. It’s bloody eye watering for insurance but want to do it right. Thanks.
