Pizza express took payment twice - what to do?

Dd (16) and a friend went on a day out today and had lunch in pizza express. They were 2 hours from home so this isn’t a local or accessible place.

When it was time to pay, dd used Apple Pay to pay the bill for her and her friend. The server said that the payment was declined and asked dd to do it again. So she did. Dd checked her bank account later and the payment has actually been taken twice.

I don’t know what to do really. The bill was £50. So they’ve taken £100. If I phone them up, will they admit this and how will they give us the money back? We can’t go to that branch again as it’s so far away and would cost more than that for a train ticket. And I don’t fancy giving them card details over the phone as I have a concern that this wasn’t an actual error and was potentially a situation where the payment could have gone unnoticed.

Big city, lots of tourists and passers through.

has anyone got any advice? I don’t want a voucher, I want the money.

You'll be able to sort this out by phone or email. Give them a call in the first instance.

Are both the payments pending? I've had this happen with other retailers before and one payment always got dropped back

Pizzaex · 17/02/2025 21:54

Yes, I’ve looked and both payments are pending. Hope the bank might stop one

If both the payments are pending my experience is that only one will go through. But you could call the bank in the morning and see what they say

SH23B · 17/02/2025 21:56

If the payments are both pending its likely one will drop off in a week or so. It won't show as a refund, it will be as though it never happened

BeaAndBen · 17/02/2025 21:57

The bank will sort it. It’s a doddle.

Pizzaex · 17/02/2025 21:58

Looks like the bank is the best bet first then.

My bank actually have an option to query a payment as a duplicate payment where this has happened. Don't know if Apple do but it's worth looking. Then it's an automatic refund.

Apple Pay is just like using a card - it's not a bank in itself so they would just direct you back to query with your bank.

I would echo PPs and one of those transactions will drop automatically within 24h. If it doesn't, speak to bank but don't bother before 24h is up as they will just tell you to wait.

Hi, I’ve had this happen to me this week at the Pizza Express Covent Garden branch on St Martin’s Lane. Is this the same place it happened to you and did you get the money sorted?
