Victoria Derbyshire

Sir Keir Starmer tells #bbclaurak that after speaking to President Trump, President Zelensky & President Macron, ‘the UK along with France will come up with a plan to stop the fighting, and then we’ll discuss that plan with the US’

Of the scenes in the Oval Office - ‘nobody wants to see that’

I think it’s been an excellent programme today. Contributions from all three main party leaders and an interesting panel.

DuncinToffee · 02/03/2025 09:55

Kemi Badenoch

Kemi Badenoch says Trump and Vance “humiliated” President Zelensky.

“My heart went out to President Zelensky… I couldn’t believe what was happening… he was being humiliated. President Zelensky is a hero”. #bbclaurak

Tbh while I think Badenoch is useless, I do actually want her party to survive in some form that does not involve becoming like the politics of the US.

If nothing else, European democracy should think carefully about Russia and who speaks for it. Because we don't want these people getting traction in the UK.

countrygirl99 · 02/03/2025 10:03

Is it too much to hope that Friday's scenes give the Tories a kick up the pants and they buck their ideas up and come up with constructive policies and stop being Reform?

DuncinToffee · 02/03/2025 10:03

Ed Davey

“I was shocked & appalled” at the scenes in the Oval Office between Trump & Zelensky says Sir Ed Davey. He tells #bbclaurak Lib Dems do not think the State Visit should be cancelled & calls for the visit to extract “security guarantees for Ukraine”.

I wonder if a lot of the cosplaying fascists have suddenly realised what it really means ? Yes, it all sounded very appealing when the idea of a Russian expansion was just words. Not it's very real people are realising it could affect them. And that is when the narrative shifts.

As per the Daily Mail headline yesterday.

For the Tories, this (played right) is a lottery win. They can really big up the fact that not only did the immediately move to support Ukraine when in power (which will be their only achievement of note in 2125 history books). But that unlike Comrade Farage, they aren't backing Putin.

Wow.

She does have a conscience.

I think the idea of being RE appeals to people until they realise how utterly devoid of any human emotion you need to be to stay there.

Guess his latest tweets were even too vile for them

Sorry to post a Mail front page, but 😲

Blimey. That front page is as unexpected as Badenoch’s response. I feel as if I’m dreaming.

itsgettingweird · 02/03/2025 11:12

If any slight morsel of positive comes out of Trump and Vance's televised interview with Zelenskyy it'll be the realisation around the world of what being an extreme RW leader entails.

I think because we don't really see the likes of Putin it's easy not to realise exactly who he is in the real world sense iyswim?

He's like a fictional baddy who we all know does abhorrent things but unlike Trump he's not out there doing it visually in person on the world stage.

I'm not sure that explains what I mean but hopefully it does?

BIossomtoes · 02/03/2025 11:14

Makes sense to me @itsgettingweird. I think you’re right.

DuncinToffee · 02/03/2025 11:16

A former spy and close friend of Vladimir Putin has been engineering a restart of Russia’s Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline to Europe with the backing of US investors, a once unthinkable move that shows the breadth of Donald Trump’s rapprochement with Moscow.

Trump seems to have achieved the impossible and made the Fail say something positive about a Labour leader. Wonders will never cease.

Piggywaspushed · 02/03/2025 11:28

And in another gosh, really, moment there's a somewhat pro Starmer thread just popped up.

Having cogitated on this, I think we should let the state visit go ahead. After all allies keep promises to allies, don't they ? (Which the UK MSM are free to tack as a line while he's here, polluting our sacred air).

However, unlike the coronation, the police should do fuck all to keep protestors away (if I had my way they'd direct protesters as a public service). And make sure foreign press are given a ringside seat.

Is there a crowdfunder for the blimp balloon this time ? Sign me up.

I suspect if we wanted to we could organise a crown big enough to carry Air Force one to Buck House. Who remembers 2012 ?

cardibach · 02/03/2025 11:33

As regards the state visit, there’s no need to cancel. These things take aaaaaages to organise. I reckon 4 years should do it…

Hopefully Europe can say "Non. Merci".

A pan European nuclear power dash would be useful right now. While we can. Before those skills are lost forever (which I suspect is part of the investment plan the Trumpster has been sold). Maybe we could poach some recently available US talent ?

BIossomtoes · 02/03/2025 11:36

Will Trump even still want his state visit after he sees today’s pictures of the (casually dressed) King with Zelenskyy? Starmer and Charles really are playing a blinder here.

Who’s going to buy the gas? Where do the US backers expect to get revenue from?

Edited

It may have been on the US thread (or I may have seen it in a feed) but a throwaway comment yesterday spelled it out. "When you have lost the Mail, you know you have lost the country". Which has a kernel of truth. The Mail is for the more thoughtful Reform-y types. If they are backing Starmer then it's a sign that Farages traitorous whining may have passed it's sell by date. Much like Moseleys time in the sun was cut short when the Germans were waving across the channel.

"Interesting times, Mr. President" (Whoops Apocalypse)

BIossomtoes · 02/03/2025 11:44

I was mocked yesterday when I said Reform may not even exist by the next election. It doesn’t look quite so silly this morning.
