Where is my waist (Pic include)

I keep reading that waist measurement should be more than half your height and about hip to waist ratio.

My problem is I am not sure where my waist is. Some say it’s on line with your belly button and some say it is the slimmest part. Those two things are not the same for me.

so which line on this picture is my actual waist?

Red is online with my belly button, Blue is my slimmest part and Green is where I would expect it to be, just above my hips?

The green line/slimmest part is the waist.

I'm confused about what you mean - "waist measurement should be XX" and "what am I aiming for hips:waist?"
Not sure where you're reading this. Your body shape is affected by fat percentage and muscle mass but also a lot by your unique anatomy e.g. the width of your hip bones. I think you have an amazing figure and many would be envious of your defined waist

I've always wondered this too.

I think the waistband of your leggings is right.

You have a lovely figure!

From wiki:

The waist is usually measured at the smallest circumference of the natural waist, usually just above the belly button. Where the waist is convex rather than concave, as in pregnancy and obesity, the waist may be measured at a vertical level 1 inch above the navel.

Strictly, the waist circumference is measured at a level midway between the lowest palpable and the iliac crest, respectively typically 60% and 64% of total height. It can be predicted as 72% of the neck height; an alternative approximation, very relevant in anthropometry, is Small of the Back (SOB) + 2cm.

Agree with most, green line, where the leggings sit.

Isn’t your belly button under your leggings though? I don’t understand how if can sit within your ribcage?

Waisted · 15/02/2025 14:39

My belly button is under my legging yes, I think after three pregnancies I carry my fat right on my belly which brings my belly button down.

@Kim5678 I was talking about the healthy waist measurement, I have seen it a lot on threads about how bmi is no longer the useful measure of health and instead we should be focusing on waist being half our height or something about hip to waist ratio.

@Waisted
sorry, just realised I read the red/blue lines wrong way round! V dozy of me!

I was wondering that this morning. I measured my waist, which seemed really high up, it was 31 inches which is half my height so I felt smug. I then measured my spare tyre, under my belly button and it was 40 inches. That seems just as important as my 'waist' (if it was my waist) measurement.

The definition PP put upthread that if you are obese you measure an inch above the belly button makes sense.

Green.

DownWhichOfLate · 15/02/2025 16:35

I think waist should be 70% of hips.

Bend to the side - it’s wherever you fold!

I so regret doing this, my fold is huge 😢😢😢

PickAChew · 15/02/2025 16:45

If your belly has been stretched in the past and your skin has lost elasticity then the position of your belly button isn't a useful guide. Like a PP the slimmest part of my waist is 31" and quite high up while my "high hip" is in line with my belly button and is 39', slightly bigger than my natural hip (I make clothes so do need to know these measurements for myself!) due to loads of loose skin.

One trick from dressmaking to find the natural waist is to knot a length of narrow elastic and see where it settles.

NovemberMorn · 15/02/2025 16:48

Green, and you have a nice figure too,😀

As long as it only folds on the side you’re bending!

My parents always answered this sort of question with "Well, where did you last have it?"

Hope that helps. 😉
