Half a day in/around Southampton - ideas?

I'll be spending half a day in Southampton while my DC goes to a university offer-holders' day. I want to check out the city centre, and have a walk. Are there any must-sees? If I leave the car at the university car park, is the city centre a decent walk or am I better off getting the bus and saving the walk for a different part of town? Recommendations for lunch?

Walk in to town and head for The Bargate, Merchants house and Wool house for a feel of the old town

it’s not a nice walk and the bus will get you into the centre in about ten mins. Buses are super regular from the uni. Old town is a decent shout,
id also recommend Bedford place for lunch (get off the bus at giddy bridge) you could then walk down and look at the shops/old town/ocean village. Don't expect a nice seafront, there isn’t one but the marina is nice
