My nephew has ADHD and possible ASD awaiting assessment for the ASD. I receive distressed messages from my sister all the time. Nothing I say helps. I feel useless.

Are you able to give her a few hours of respite on a regular, predictable basis? Two hours on a Saturday morning for instance, so she could go out for a walk..

Giving the parents a break seems to be the biggest help for the families I work with. Can you do this, or similar practical things to help?

frozendaisy · 12/02/2025 06:05

What is she distressed about?
Is it practical everyday things?
Is it about her, how she is processing?
Is it about fears of the unknown?
Child’s behaviour?

Can you visit?

If you can’t visit and nothing you say helps then just letting her sound off on you will be helping.

I would go round and support (no judgement or opinion just follow her lead)
Offer to do housework/help
Childcare (if manageable)
Read up on adhd/asd (reputable websites/books) don't be a know it all but at least you will have a good understanding of the issues she's facing.
Be supportive/let her vent.

Just listening may help more than you realise.

CCLCECSC · 12/02/2025 06:41

Spend some time with her like others have suggested.

Learn how to look after him so that she can have a break. Depending on his needs and behaviours this may take time and work on your part - put that time and work in.
