Tv series that stuck with you

I was watching an old episode of gogglebox - they were watching the final episode of Its a Sin and I instantly started tearing up. I remember when I watched it I couldn’t stop crying for hours - the scene where the main character is in hospital and tells his mum, he just looks like a scared boy. I thought it was a fantastic series but il never watch it again.
Is there a scene in a series that just sticks in your head and that emotion comes straight back as soon as you think about it?

Bangkok Hilton gave me nightmares for years. Really got under my skin.

suburburban · 10/02/2025 19:25

Ryan's daughter (film shown on tv) was also shocking

I loved the theme tunes to The Flashing Blade and White Horses.

@sashh - I remember those theme songs - I loved them! (And Belle and Sebastian!)

IlovePond · 11/02/2025 08:04

Just remembered Branded with Chuck Connors and Zorro!

It’s weird how a mention of these old shows brings the songs back to me.

What was the one where the man’s uniform buttons get cut off in the opening credits due to being thrown out of the army? (I thought it was Branded, but apparently not!)

Moonlightdust · 11/02/2025 09:24

Forbrydelsen (The Swedish series of The Killing) - amazing

Lost (Started out so good but the series got too far fetched & complicated by the end).

Downton Abbey - I was very late to this epic series as I was too busy with babies when it first aired. This resulted in a recent binge watch of entire series which I absolutely loved!

Breaking Bad - emotional rollercoaster. Felt bereft after it finished.

The Missing 1 & 2 - good British series.

Happy Valley - great acting.

Jane the virgin - totally different genre to my usual taste but I remember really enjoying this series and it was great escapism!

One day - mini series but loved it.

Dark - a memorable series.

The Rain - again I recall this being quite an addictive series too.

Stranger things - definitely unforgettable.

The first series of The Young Offenders. Pity they didn't leave it there as the rest wasn't anywhere near as good.

CocoPlum · 11/02/2025 17:27

I watched Torchwood: Children of Earth when DD was a newborn and I was in the thick of.PND, so that stuck!

It's a Sin was amazing.

IlovePond · 11/02/2025 17:36

@YesTonightJosephine The Herbs!!!
(sings) I’m Bayleaf, I’m the gardener, I work from early morn. My work is sweeping up leaves and tidying all the lawn!

Dappy777 · 11/02/2025 17:44

House of Cards (the original British series, not the American re-make)
I Claudius
Cracker
Brideshead Revisited
Civilization (the Kenneth Clark original, not the woke re-make)
Colditz

MargotMoon · 11/02/2025 17:57

Bernie Clifton's Dressing Room/12 Days of Christine - Inside No.9

THAT episode of Cucumber 😳

The episode of Only Fools and Horses where Rodney marries Cassandra and everyone leaves the reception until it's just Del on his own listening to Holding Back the Years 💔

The episode of 999 with Michael Burke with someone I know on

Cracker - the one where they are looking for Robert Carlyle's character Albie and raid a right wing white supremacist club, also the one with Susan Lynch, which remind me of...

Save Me - the incredibly harrowing episode with the paedophile 'auction'

The Bear episode with the Christmas dinner

Schitts Creek - Simply the Best/A Little Bit Alexis (nice/funny ones to counterbalance the emotional devastation of the rest of my list)

The Mad Death

This was about rabies wasn't it, about 1983-ish?

Between that, Threads and documentaries about spontaneous human combustion, I was a nervous wreck in the early 80s.

YesTonightJosephine · 11/02/2025 18:37

OK so many, many more to add ... not sure to how to edit original post ... doh!

@Laughingravy and @suburburban Stephen Poliakoff is a total legend!

SHOOTING THE PAST, 1999 is probably my favourite of the Poliakoff TV Series too.

Poliakoff's Caught on a Train, with Michael Kitchen and Peggy Ashcroft is brilliant.
