I’m going to Amsterdam! What are the best things to do there?

Going with work to Amsterdam in July. Never been before and very excited. I’m taking a couple of days after the work trip to extend my stay and enjoy the city. I want to do Anne Frank’s house and the Van Gogh exhibition. What other must-do’s are there in Amsterdam? Me and colleagues are also wanting to de-stress on an evening. None of us use drugs (well I haven’t since Uni) but when in Rome and all that - where and how can a not pot-smoking crowd enjoy weed without getting so high we’ll accidentally stumble into a canal? Is it best to get something in food?

You will need to book a fair way in advance for both the Anne Frank House and Van Gogh Museum. The other must-see is the Rijksmuseum, especially the second floor Gallery of Honour.
Sorry I can't help with the other stuff, but I'm sure someone will 😉

Oh thanks for the tip on booking I wouldn’t have known that!

Definitely the dungeon, was the best experience I've had, couldn't get in to Anne Frank house as didn't book early enough.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 05/02/2025 10:35

Book early, very early!

Don't go the floating chinese restaurant (if it still exists) and order the banquet for four, and fall asleep at the table...

BigDahliaFan · 05/02/2025 10:37

The church in the attic. You might have to book.

Be careful when eating hash brownies etc, it's really common to get off your face as it's really hard to tell how much you've had. Not me as I don't do that, but my friend was high as a kite after half a brownie.

chelseahealyslips · 05/02/2025 10:38

There's been a lot of talk about the drugs being extremely potent in and out of food. In fact in food is particularly risky as it is a random amount and not a controlled amount inside the piece of food you're eating. People are getting so high they're hospitalised as it takes much longer for the effects to wear off.

Kneeboobs · 05/02/2025 10:39

I ate a cake and biscuits, was absolutely fine,my friends who shared a pipe not so much 😂

JandamiHash · 05/02/2025 10:41

So Anne Frank’s houae and Van Gogh arent
bookable for July yet!

I can’t believe how cheap the tickets are!!

Oh crikey I might just have a spliff then. Or a bong. Oh the nostalgia 🤣

I love the free ferry from the back of the station, which takes you over to the north side. Quite industrial, some good venues, craft workshops, graffiti museum. A fab tap room Oedipus) , if that is your thing.

If you have time, public transport is fantastic. Den Hague, including the tram ride to the beach and numerous bars, is good, Utrecht, Amersfoort, Edam, Lieden and industrial Rotterdam etc.

The Netherlands is beautiful ( much more so than Amsterdam - though I love the canals).
This is great in North Amsterdam ( with a beach area) but there are others. https://pllek.nl

You’ll want a coffee shop, not a cafe or koffiehuis, or bar.

Stick to weed rather than hash. You can buy a pre-rolled joint to share. The effects will be more immediate than an edible so you’ll have a better idea of what you can handle.

And yes, all the big attractions need booked well in advance and even then you’ll still have to queue a bit. There are some nice canal tours with coffee and cake (not with hash!) included.

Fabrique des Lumières.

On the weed front, I'd avoid it IMO. You can do plenty of other things that are fun. There are loads of great bars to visit, fantastic café, and cracking restaurants. Why waste time getting high?

I remember doing a canal tour with wine and cheese. Best thing I'd ever done in AMS. Much better than smoking a joint.

Because life is short and I want to? The canal tour sounds amazing though, I do love me a canal boat!

HEMA is a great shop for stationery, makeup, kids clothes, and household items you didn't know that you needed.

Go to a pancake house, the floating flower market, and a cheese shop.

LoyalSheep · 05/02/2025 11:19

FlowerBee62 · 05/02/2025 11:32

Please take some canal boat tours ,really enjoyable and relaxing, one boat owner did his own commentary telling all about the city ,really informative.

RobinEllacotStrike · 05/02/2025 11:44

Hire bikes and go cycling out of the city along the canals. In Spring plan to cycle by tulip fields etc

Eat frittes & mayo (or blue cheese sauce).

Buy a snack from one of the hot food vending machines at FEBO.

Eat out - I've never had a bad meal in Amsterdam.

Boom Chicago is a great night out.

Take a boat tour of the canals - there use to be some tours in lovely old wooden open boats run by boat restoration enthuasists.

If you don't want to smoke get some consumables - space cake, brownies etc.

Take the Anne Frank walking tour- learnt so much additional stuff and get to see hidden parts you wouldn't spot otherwise- was our most memorable part!

Beebsta · 05/02/2025 12:03

You said you are going for a work trip. Will you be with work colleagues? I would not be partaking in weed with work colleagues personally.

TheyAreNotAngelsTheyDontCareAtAll · 05/02/2025 12:03

There's the Vagina Museum too...

GreenSedan · 05/02/2025 12:05

Definitely pay the extra few quid for the talk when you're visiting the Anne Frank House. Well worth the extra in my view. Amsterdam is so beautiful. Just hanging out and walking next to the canals is worth the trip alone.

SingingSands · 05/02/2025 12:07

I love the Rijksmuseum. Standing in front of Rembrandt's Night Watch is awesome! Every floor is fantastic, so much to see.

Anne Frank house is very good - obviously you have to be ok in enclosed spaces. The exhibition at the end is heartbreaking - take tissues for sure.

Cycling in Vondelpark, stopping for mint tea.

Just wandering around in the Jordaan, popping into shops and stopping for lunch.

Evening canal boat tours are good - you can bring your own picnic!

No experience with getting high.

If you're flying back from Schiphol airport give yourself PLENTY of time. It's so enormous, the security queues can be extremely long and then you can have a very long walk to your gate. We were like the family from Home Alone running through the airport last time we were returning home, so stressful!

Pinkdreams · 05/02/2025 12:08

The lookout is really good there's a swing over the rooftop,m
