Had a nasty fall and now I’m in pain

Was out for a walk on Saturday and had a nasty fall- ended up completely flat on the pavement with my entire body taking the blow.

two days later and I’m in quite a bit of pain in my torso, it even hurts to laugh! My arms hurt- it even hurts a lot to change gear in my car- and my sides are painful. My shoulders too.

I haven’t had a fall like this probably since I was a kid! Is it normal to be aching so much?

Do you have a minor injury dept. You may have cracked a rib. Not a lot you can do about it but would make sense.

I agree, if you have minor injuries go there. Nobody on here can provide a virtual X ray service sadly. There's nothing that can be done for ribs but if you've broken an arm then obviously that needs attention

I don't think our minor injuries deals with anything torso related so you might need a and e.

Yes,it hurts like hell,! I fell over last year, wet grass slight slope, walking the dogs. Backwards onto my sacrum. It was very painful, within a few hours, everything hurt, from the neck down, where it had been jarred. I started on ice packs,(bought an inflatable cushion,I couldn't sit down,) then alternating, ice pack, hot bath. After 12 days, I went to the local ED, because the pain was getting worse, not better. I had fractured my coccyx and wrist before,so I knew what that pain felt like (much worse) X ray NAD, Dr gave me co codamol counter strength..it hurt for 2 months. ATM hospitals are overrun,GD had a head injury last week and 4.5 hour wait. If you try either 111, or minor injuries,if they think you need an x ray, they will send you to ED

For context, I am a horserider so have a very robust approach to these things you may not wish to emulate....

With that advisory warning - I follow a 10 day rule. Aches following a fall usually feel worse before they get better, but if it is not significantly improving within 10 days then I would make a GP appointment. Your aches and pains sound like me after a hard fall from a horse and there isn't much you can do. It does sound like you may have cracked a rib, but there can be nothing done about that and it will heal itself. Two days is probably peak pain, by 10 days it should feel much better.

But that is me - other Mumsnetters will be far quicker to the doctor (because such experiences will be rarer for them). In the end it us up to you.

Yes, took a tumble similarly a few weeks back. Broken arm which I knew instantly, lots of bruising, still evident and in pain.

TiramisuThief · 03/02/2025 08:39

Agree with @HeadNorth

The adrenaline will mask a lot of the pain when you fall over and your muscles will stiffen up overnight. You should start to feel some improvement by Friday.

You fell onto concrete/ tarmac which is a really hard surface and will have jarred you all over. Have you got some painkillers?

MoSalahsBeard · 03/02/2025 09:23

Yeah I’ve got some over the counter strength cocodamol. My rib area on my side hurts when I cough/ laugh/ touch it so wondering if there is indeed a cracked rib. Might pop to the minor injuries place cos online it says they can look at rib injuries.

It's probably bruising/bruised rib - if you're able to drive I doubt you've actually broken a rib. Are you able to breathe ok?
DH fell flat on his back last winter (slipped on ice!), fit and healthy usually but he was properly winded and it took him a good few days to feel ok again!

Yeah I can breathe ok but other stuff hurts. I’ve had a broken rib on the front before that was painful for breathing but this is on the side lower down.
