How did my mobile number (but not me) call someone?!

I'm a bit freaked out right now and don't know if its a big deal
I've just had a text message from someone, saying theyre sorry they missed my call, who am I, what do I want.
So I messaged back, I think you have a wrong number.
She says no, you called me at 12.11 today.
I sent back a photo of my call log and said no I didn't - I was very confused at this point.
She then sent a photo of a missed call on her phone , with a phone number matching mine!?
How has this happened? Has my phone number been hacked? Do i need to contact my mobile provider (3)?

I have had this before, it's called spoofing.
I think you are meant to report to the phone company.

Yes, your number has been spoofed....the phone company can't do anything as often the spoofers originate from outside the UK. All you can do is hope that they move on quickly to another number (I had irate callers for about 24 hours, phone company suggested I change my number..and that was the extent of the help they could give. Luckily it stopped quickly).

this is very common OP. I suppose you could tell your network if you want but there’s realistically nothing they can do. You don’t need to be freaked out and you haven’t been hacked. Just one of those annoying things that happens these days.

I get several spam calls a day most days, all from ‘regular’ numbers.

Noted , all , thanks, and I was calm about it until speaking to a relative a moment ago who has had the exact same thing happen to them - they had a call today from someone, who had had a call from them. So 2 members of same family having had their number spoofed on the same day - is that something to worry about or purely coincidence?

I've had someone call me and same circumstances.

I also have been in the same area as someone and we get spam sms messages.

Nothing you can do, change passwords on your iCloud account etc

I had this once- very business like lady called and said she had missed my call - my number had been spoofed and used for all sorts. Email was hacked and had an out of office put on that was spamming loads of people. Was bloody outraged at the time!
