Oxenholme - is there enough to do in a day?

If I arrive by train for a short day here is there enough to do? Have googled and it seems to be saying that lakes are a bit away etc.
So…. need some personal knowledge…. are there nice shops, museums and cafes to fill a short day?
Thanks!

I don't think there's much there, but you could get the bus to Kendal.

OhDeareyMe · 29/01/2025 19:45

I’m afraid not, the station itself is in the middle of nowhere, there is a small food place just outside and a pub within walking distance. A taxi into Kendal itself if quite do-able though and there are more options there for food and shops depending on how much luggage you have. The lakes aren’t really an option though there is a train from Oxenholme into Windermere which might be feasible.

Oxenholme markets itself as "for the Lake District". It's miles away.

coxesorangepippin · 29/01/2025 19:46

What they said

I'd carry on through to the lakes

AxolotlRose · 29/01/2025 19:47

There is nothing in Oxenholme apart from houses. You could get the bus or train down into Kendal. It's a nice enough town but there aren't many shops, there's a ruined castle and some nice places for a pint or a coffee. You would be better to stay on the train one stop and go to Penrith or get off a stop earlier in Lancaster if you want to fill a day!

From Oxenholme you could get another train to Windermere if you're wanting 'the lakes'.

Summers8865 · 29/01/2025 19:49

Thanks so much- just looked and it seems a bus to Kendal is only 7 minutes?
So I guess in Kendal there will be enough to fill a day?
From google it does look like there’s nice shops and cafes in Kendal? 🤞

Wondering why you'd think of a day trip to oxenholme?
Depending on where you're coming from maybe consider going on the coastal line and visiting silverdale (rspb reserve, lots of nice walks possible or Arnside (good walking, fab views over to the lakes, nice little town)

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 29/01/2025 19:53

Kendal is pleasant enough, but I wouldn't spend a whole day there. Oxenholme is just some houses and a station - very boring and drab.

OhDeareyMe · 29/01/2025 19:58

I think I’d struggle to fill a full day in Kendal even!

RandomMess · 29/01/2025 20:01

Kendal is about a 3 hour, 4 at a max trip including a meal.

RedDeer · 29/01/2025 20:27

Kendal is a nice town, lots of cafes, pubs etc. There is an arts centre, and a museum as well. It's a market town so it has a few high street shops and a few hidden gems. It's not a huge town however you can definitely find things to do.

Riverside walk

Summers8865 · 29/01/2025 20:33

Gosh thanks for the link and the Kendal info - I think I’ll plan to spend a short day in Kendal then. Good that there’s a museum etc

I often walk to Kendal due to the trains being cancelled from Oxenholme. Not the prettiest of walks but doable. Penrith is not so far away or Staveley. Lancaster is great and nearby but Oxenholme is not really a village as such anymore- there is good walk up from the train station to the Helm and an okish pub but not a destination unless you have a certain walk in mind.

MountainofWashing · 29/01/2025 20:38

If I had a day at oxenholme I'd get the train to Windermere. It only takes half an hour or so and is a scenic journey in itself

Digestive28 · 29/01/2025 20:42

Downhill walk in to Kendal (can go along the old canal path to town) and plenty to do. Lots of nice places and cafes and shops are down “yards” which are little alleys off the main streets. Enjoy

Digestive28 · 29/01/2025 20:44

If you do go to Windermere the Lakeland (the kitchen shop) has a lovely cafe with good views.
