Cheque issued in previous name - will the bank accept it?

Old school I know, but I've received a cheque in my married name and I'm long since divorced. If I take it into my bank will they accept it bearing in mind I've had my account since before I was married? So, maiden name when I originally opened the account, changed to married name and now back to maiden name. I guess I should probably dig out my divorce certificate and deed poll showing my name change. Or should I go back to the sender and ask them to reissue it? It's a solicitor so I expect they would also require documentary evidence of my name change.

It used to be that so long as the cheque wasn’t crossed (ie payee only) and you had proof of the name change it would be ok.

Might be worth tweeting the bank concerned to ask before you take a trip into town.

I would be shocked if they even bothered to check the name.

Can you pay it in via a banking app?

How much is it for? Plenty of banks wouldn't even look at the payee.

Cheques have the crossing printed on them. I had a cheque several years back (possibly the last one l ever banked) where someone had confused my name with that of a friend. I paid it in through an ATM, no problem at all.

I once paid in a hefty cheque from dh’s old aunt for her care home fees - we were paying them initially since she insisted that if the staff knew she had any money they’d find a way to steal it!!
But I realised only while passing it over the bank counter that the signature was a) in her long-gone maiden name (instead of the printed name on the cheque) and b) it was all in very wobbly writing. I was instantly convinced that they’d think we were swindling some poor vulnerable old dear and call the police!
But they didn’t even notice.
