Wicked (film vs stage)

Hello,
DD and I are massive fans of the film - love the songs and Ariana Grande.
Everyone I know who has seen the stage show prefer the stage show, making me think we won't like it as much seeing as we love the film.

Any opinions from those who have seen both? Especially those who saw the film first?

I can afford to take her to one show this year and not sure between Six or Wicked (I've seen Six already and know she'll love it)

I preferred the film. I saw stage show a year or so ago and must admit I came out still with not much clue of the story.

Are you close to London and flexible enough to be able to try and get rush tickets - will that stretch the budget to both?

twigsand · 26/01/2025 15:21

I've seen both but prefer the film in all honesty, the stage show has some gaps where things flit from one scene to another and I think the film fills these in perfectly (wouldn't be possible without making the stage show really long!)

LittleRedRidingHoody · 26/01/2025 15:28

I've seen both multiple times!

I think it actually may be better to see the stage version after the film - you'll have a better idea of the plot too. However obviously the film only covers the plot up until the halfway point - so you'll be getting major spoilers for the second movie seeing it on stage!

Do Six this year, then you can do Wicked next year after seeing part 2 of the movie version. Otherwise you're spoiling the second film for yourselves. Also, Wicked will run for years, Six may not.

Don't know if this helps, but I think Six has been filmed to be shown in cinemas in April maybe just for one day though

curlycurlymoo · 26/01/2025 18:21

I love them both. The show is fantastic.

I like the film but love the stage show. There's nothing actually wrong with the film really (other than I don't see AG as a great Galinda - decent actress and singer but just not the right person for that role imo), it's just I think musicals do tend to be better live on the whole.

hby9628 · 26/01/2025 18:32

Honestly, I've seen the musical 3 times. I've always absolutely loved it and been blown away by it. The last time I saw it in oct last year in London I wasn't impressed. It didn't captivate me in the same way & it felt dated.
I watched the film with no expectations but absolutely loved it. I thought Ariana Grande was superb. I don't know if seeing the stage show would feel even more dated after seeing the film.

BarbaraHoward · 26/01/2025 18:35

I haven't seen the stage show, but in general I think it's a better experience to see a musical in person and have the performers live in front of you.

I’ve seen the stage show and loved it but that was years ago in NY when I was a teen and I’m guessing from the date it was with the original cast (should have bought a program!). IDK if that made a difference. I didn’t particularly enjoy the film and thought it was too long and really dragged. And on that note the first film is only the half way point for the show so worth bearing in mind that there will be ‘spoilers’ for Wicked 2. If you know she’d love Six I would just go for that and not risk Wicked. Also, I reckon Wicked will run for years whereas Six probably won’t so you can always see it another time, maybe after you’ve watched Wicked 2 so can get the full comparison.

GRCP · 26/01/2025 20:35

That's such a good point about spoilers for part 2. I think we'll go for Six and wait until next year for Wicked.
Thanks so much everyone that was very helpful!
