Do you like a poke bowl?

The rainbow salmon one from Tesco is lovely, really fresh and tasty! It’s salmon, rice, edamame beans, red cabbage, yellow pepper, crispy onions and soy sauce.

I saw a few people buying them yesterday for their meal deal and wondered how popular they were. Also I’ve never made my own.

Have you tried any from other stores and do you make your own version?

Enlighten me - what is a poke bowl - what makes it a poke bowl and not a salad

Lady1576 · 25/01/2025 15:17

I like them but I wouldn‘t buy them out and about because it‘s just random yummy stuff in a bowl. Zero effort or cooking required. Buy all the bits and make yourself a week of yummy packed lunches!

I occasionally work in Birmingham and always get one from a pile bowl place as they are amazing. So many different options and ingredients. All the supermarket ones look at bit rubbish in comparison.

Can someone tell me how to pronounce poke? Is it poke or more like pokay?

Is that the one on colmore row opposite snow hill? It's the bees knees that one!!

I was almost scared to read this thread. 😱😳😂

Me too - 'poke bowl' sounds revolting to me.

Marketing 😂 it’s a salad. A delicious one.

I do make my own quite often but there’s one near my office with delicious fresh raw tuna and I love it so much.

It's a MN massive salad in disguise 🥸

CeeJay81 · 25/01/2025 16:39

That's funny. Just seen this thread while I'm sat on my break eating a Yo chicken and sweet pepper poke bowl. They're really nice. Always get them if I see them reduced at work.

Fluffycloudsfloatinginthesky · 25/01/2025 16:46

I love them and make my version of them at home. I put in

Chicken
Smoked salmon
Rice
Pineapple
Sweetcorn
Cucumber
Crispy onions
Edamame beans
Terrayki sauce

It's a bit more sushi like - my daughter told me they originated from Hawaii but no idea if that's true.

chargeitup · 25/01/2025 17:42

@midgetastic @MyIvyGrows @CherryMarigold

It's a bit weird calling it a salad unless you also call sushi a salad that is squished into a tube or a burrito bowl a salad 🫤

A Poke bowl is raw fish seasoned and usually served with rice. Modern versions include pickles and avocado and some versions where the fish is cooked. But it's no more salad than a kebab is

77Fee · 25/01/2025 17:45

I've tried making my own. Bought little dishes to put the soy sauce in too. But the faff of making is not worth it. Much better to buy on tesco clubcard meal deal at £5.

Ginkypig · 25/01/2025 17:48

Iv only had the one from Lidl (salmon one) I don’t know how it would compare to a “proper” one or even other supermarket versions but I really enjoy it when I get it. I don’t have it often truthfully but that’s partly because i don’t really eat through the day so when I have it it’s because I picked it up for dinner on the way home.

Sunbeam18 · 25/01/2025 17:52

Great ideas for making them! Thank you!!

TheCrenchinglyMcQuaffenBrothers · 25/01/2025 17:54

I love a salmon poke bowl! I have the M and S or a Waitrose one (no Tesco near here and the Sainsbury's doesn't stock them). Lovely but a bit pricey, never thought to make it myself, don't know why, I cook a lot. Think I will give it a go next week.

midgetastic · 25/01/2025 17:55

Salmon , rice and veg served cold is what I would call a salad

Sushi is I think of as mouthfuls is stuff packed together - say rice, fish molded together

I would argue that sushi with some veggies would also be a salad - a sushi salad as opposed to the salmon salad described in the first post but all salads nevertheless

What you are saying is it's a specific type of salad ( like coleslaw can be a type of salad )

RabbitsRock · 25/01/2025 18:07

I had never heard of them either!

SnarkSideOfLife · 25/01/2025 18:21

I love them and often make my own.

so stuff like cucumber, pepper, grated carrot, crated red cabbage, edamame beans, avocado, small amount of sushi rice, soy sauce then some protein….either Quorn, sometimes chicken.

i had a teriyaki poke bowl from Aldi last week which was good so might try some teriyaki sauce instead of soy sauce in mine.

Doje · 25/01/2025 18:23

I make my own. I use sushi rice, or pudding rice does a similar job.

We have (cooked) salmon fillet, or smoked salmon with a combination of fridge leftovers:-

Cucumber, peppers, cherry toms, pickled red cabbage and kimchi. If I'm having them for a packed lunch I have a boiled egg, but when at home I have a poached egg.

And a dressing of soy, ginger, garlic and orange juice is really nice if I've got oranges in.

SnarkSideOfLife · 25/01/2025 18:25

I have a whole poke bowl folder on TikTok and keep saving videos to try some slightly different versions.

Snorlaxo · 25/01/2025 18:28

Is it the Yo Sushi one that’s part of the premium meal deal ? My son often picks it and would agree it’s yum.

ThatUniqueKoala · 25/01/2025 18:34

I always make the same one.

Rice, salmon, katsuobushi flakes, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, hard boiled egg, hoisin & soy sauce, pickled red onions, black & green olives, nori flakes and chilli oil

MiddleAgedDread · 25/01/2025 18:36

Yes, I used to buy them a lot for lunch and dinner when working away and I wanted fresh food. Don’t tend to buy them myself as they’re really expensive but make similar at home.

Wibblywobblybobbly · 25/01/2025 18:36

Love them. But from a proper poke place not the supermarket as I'm all about the raw fish and that needs doing properly. Loads of options in London.

ElsaSnow · 25/01/2025 18:42

I used to love the M&S chicken one - BUT one day they changed it to add cubes of pineapple or mango in and it didn't have "new" on the front and I didn't realise merrily eating it and yuk I hate pineapple/mango but at least it's just dislike not allergy!

mondaytosunday · 25/01/2025 19:32

Yes I love them!
