I’ve been sent home from hospital today after gallbladder surgery and ERCP for bile duct stones.

I’ve been fitted with 2 drains, one collecting blood, the other bile. I wasn’t expecting to be sent home if I’m honest, but there was a last minute (or so it seemed) decision for me to go home and come back next week for a drain check.

They asked me if I was ok with emptying the drains so I can note how much is coming out each day. I said yes, as I’d seen the nurses do it regularly, however I’ve come to do it tonight and I can’t figure out how to open the bags 🤦🏻‍♀️

Picture of the drains is attached (edited in case anyone squeamish opened the thread)

Can anyone tell me what I need to do?

Push the horizontal white stopper to the right. See how the white part has a clear bit? That’s where it drains out of. It’ll come out immediately so be prepared.

When you’re finished draining it, just slide it back.

Point the end of the tube into whatever you're emptying it into.
Then press on the horizontal plastic and it will allow a hole to line up and release the fluid.
