Do you have a non office/screen job? What do you do?

I put this in the work thread but thought I'd get more diverse answers in chat.

I've always hated working, but I've come to realise that's because I'm sat on my arse all day staring at a screen 9-5.

I feel like i was doing something, not necessarily physical, I might feel totally different about earning a living. I also like the idea of not working the same days every week, for a bit of variety.

For those of you who don't have office jobs, what do you do and do you enjoy it?

I would think most jobs have an element of staring at a screen for a portion of the day. I started my career in a lab and we spend a portion of our time on a computer. The only job that I have ever had that didn’t require me to be on a computer was waitressing, even when I worked in retail there was a small element that has been done on a computer. Stock take etc. I’m sure there are some jobs out there that require little to no screen time I’ll be quite interested in hearing that too.

Teacher, nurse, police officer, gardener, chef, nursery assistant, carer, postie, counsellor, social worker (though some of these require a proportion of time spent in front of a screen).

@Positivenancy I wouldn't mind a portion of the work being admin based, I just can't stand the thought of sitting at my desk for the next 30 years whilst I make someone else rich!

I like the idea of nursing, but it's not financially feasible to take 3 years out of work at the moment

@Positivenancy I disagree. Plenty of jobs have little or no screen work, too many to list.

But I suppose that's the MN narrow view of work, which is all going to be taken over by AI anyway.

OP, you probably also need to think about whether you need to earn a certain amount of money, what work is available where you live, whether you want to work with people, can you do physical demanding work etc.

I've realised I'm happiest when I'm alone in my car driving somewhere, listening to podcasts. My dream work day is somewhere where I do a couple of easy site visits, and most of the time is spent driving there and back. I've even thought about whether I want to become a lorry driver.

That’s why I said most I didn’t say all jobs I said most… of course there are some and I said I’d be more than happy to hear what they are like another PP also status there is an element of screen time in a lot of jobs. Not all…

I'm a special school TA. Lousy pay but never ever boring!
I sit down for a few minutes at a time if I'm lucky. The upside is I'm heading for 60, still reasonably fit as I spend half the day squatting down with small children or chasing them!
I sometimes fantasise about an office based job then realise I'd be bored out of my mind Grin
I sometimes think I'd like to be a driver though too, as I love being on the road!
