Phone the Dr or let it run its course?

Around Sunday lunchtime I began to feel unwell. I have had dreadful diarrhoea since. I can’t eat much so I am surviving on water, dry toast and the odd packet of ready salted crisps as I have craved the salt. I am taking water and electrolytes. The diarrhoea isn’t getting any better. It’s just brown/green water I am passing now (I am sorry). I was in pain Sunday/Monday, terrible cramps yesterday and I just feel wiped out this morning. I don’t know what to do would immodium work or am
i better to get what’s in me out? I feel so drained. I am not sure what a Dr can do.

You could phone the pharmacist for advice and they can advise you.

HoraceCope · 22/01/2025 07:06

no to doctor
yes to pharmacy
imo

Phone your doctor, yes. You may need to be admitted to hospital for dehydration. Don't leave it any longer. Let the medics decide what you need. Hope you're OK.

Don't take immodium. Get medical advice. Have you been sick at all?

No sickness. Have felt nauseous but that’s it.

Call GP as you should probably drop off a stool sample if it’s greenish, so can see what bugs involved (viral versus something like campylobacter, which needs antibiotics).

Zanatdy · 22/01/2025 07:15

As long as you’re taking in some fluids you should be ok for a few days with minimal food. Not sure what GP would do, best to take some rehydration sachets and rest. Feel better soon OP

I agree with this.

I had exactly this in October and so did my mum. It took me two weeks to feel anywhere near normal and weeks after that to be 100%.

My husband went to the pharmacy because there was no way I could make it there, I could hardly walk with aches and weakness and I had to be close to the toilet at all times. The pharmacist just recommended electrolytes and they do help a lot with the dehydration, although I could only manage small sips.

Whatever it is it’s awful but it did pass eventually, I started turning the corner at about the seven day mark. Although I would say that if you have blood in your stools you must see a doctor.

Sounds like noro. We've just had it.

Just rest and fluids.

faithbuffy · 22/01/2025 15:49

Might be worth seeing a GP, I was like that with campylobacter
The main symptoms were headache, very high temp, nausea but no vomiting and diarrhoea every 15 mins 24/7 which lasted 7 days

Bargaintools · 29/01/2025 11:11

Just wanted to up date. I have had campylobacter. Wouldn’t wish that on any
one. Awful bug to have. Will be a while before I am eating properly I suspect. Doing little and often at the moment and very bland food. Can’t face anything else.

I thought it might be, it sounded so like when I had it in October
Probably one of the worst things I have had, norovirus was nothing compared to that!
