Has anyone changed their passport name via deed poll?

I'm finding conflicting information online about what documents I need to send them - has anyone done this and can advise?

I have, I did it online and sent an original deed, a bank statement in my new name and my old passport.

Seyee · 21/01/2025 17:12

Yes, i just sent my deed poll and I think my council tax bill, some kind of bill.

I have; I think I did my driving license first using a deed poll then used the new driving license and the deed poll to update my passport.

Was very simple, using a free deed poll that you can easily do yourself, no need to pay any company that pretends you need to pay.

This is fascinating. Would anyone say why they changed their name?

In my family we’re all called by our middle names. My payslip always had my first name on it.

When DM was dying and short of breath hospital staff kept calling her by her first name and she barely had the strength to correct t them. 😪

As the NHS does not have a singular computer records system #CallMeByName is not universally adopted.

I didn’t want to experience this myself in the future so simply swapped my forenames around. I shouldn’t have needed to though 🙄

This is all you need. Don’t pay anyone anything.

You have to pay for a new passport and driving licence (both of mine had run out, I’m not sure if you pay for a name change on these things). But the deed poll itself? Free.

hated my names basically and the family connection to them, changed both surname and first name.

TwirlyPineapple · 21/01/2025 18:32

Yes. You need a deed poll. Not a paid for one, you can literally just print a free one off the internet and get two people to sign it.

To change my passport, I had to show evidence that I was using the name somewhere else official. So I changed my bank statements first, and sent those and the deed poll with the passport form. My bank let me change the name on my account with just the deed poll.

CleanShirt · 21/01/2025 18:33

Thanks everyone! Got my old passport, deed poll, council tax bill and electricity bill for good measure.

I go by a shortened version of my name, but not the one you'd expect. Think Leanne who goes by Anne or something. People always either used the other shortening without asking, or questioned it if I told them my preferred one. So I changed my name to officially be the shorter version I use.

MimiSunshine · 21/01/2025 19:24

I did. You absolutely do not have to and shouldn’t pay anyone (including a solicitor) to change your name.

there is wording online that you can put on a word doc which basically says “I [existing name] will be known by [new name] from thus point onwards”
it’s a bit more detailed than that.

but you then get two people (friends) to witness it for you.
You then show use of the name by going to your bank and changing your name on your account and requesting a bank statement.

you then apply for a new passport in your new name and send your proof of use (the bank statement) and a short(ish) while later you get a passport in your new name. Then change your driving license and all sorted.

Thanks. Do you not need certificates to apply for the documents in your new name?

Seyee · 21/01/2025 19:32

No, you just need your written out and signed deeed poll

No not at all. When I did mine, I happened to need to register on an official database at the same time so I took the opportunity to do that and print out a screenshot and took it to the bank with me.

but you don’t need to, just take your signed declaration and that’s enough.
