Supermarket Sushi - which does it best

Piccalow · 19/01/2025 19:15

I was spoilt and previously had say access to a large supermarket that did yo! Sushi. I don't now and had some from Boots that wasn't all that great tbh. Which supermarket does the best sushi - bonus points if it's usually available in their small city centre stores

Sainsbury’s stopped doing wasabi and pickled finger in theirs so it’s crap now.

Sounds, erm delicious ShockGrin

DS loves sushi, his favourite is from the Sushi bar in Sainsbury's. Not the cheapest but if I can I try and get a too good to go bag!

They'll probably bring it back for Halloween

Snowmanscarf · 19/01/2025 20:33

Waitrose.

MsMarch · 19/01/2025 20:38

I agree that the sushi counters at waitrose and sainsbury are best. Waitrose sushi from the regular fridges is also quite good. M&s - won't touch it again after a bland experience followed by a dodgy one.

I used to get ds waitrose fridge sushi (they didnt have a counter) after his sports activity as we had a longish drive home. Always made me laugh at ridiculousness - we used to get an orange and a packet of crisps in my day!

Waitrose from their sushi making counter

Agree, really good sushi made in-store rather that brought in from a factory.

Bjorkdidit · 19/01/2025 21:01

Look for a Sushi Daily counter, that's nice.

The packs that are in the 'lunch food' section near the sandwiches are all awful.

goingdownfighting · 19/01/2025 21:16

Tesco sometimes have a yo sushi counter which isn't too bad. But yes, Waitrose is hands down the best.

"pickled finger"

REALLY hoping that's a typo...

Meanwhile, if this fits the OP's definition of a supermarket, here's the best sushi I've had in England: https://atariya.co.uk/shops/kingston-store/

Otherwise, Waitrose is great.

BartokRules · 20/01/2025 06:33

Lidl is really good and great value!

amoreoamicizia · 20/01/2025 09:12

The only problem with Waitrose is that they've often sold out of my veggie favourite by the time I can get there ☹️

MasterOfOne · 20/01/2025 09:15

M&S sushi is horrendous. Previous poster was correct they have no idea how to cook their rice.

Sainsbury's sushi counter is elite. Highly recommend

Kpo58 · 20/01/2025 09:31

Aldi & Lidl do the cheapest sushi which is ok.

My main tip is to only get sushi with the longest use by date. The more recently the sushi has been made the better. I always avoid the sushi a use by date of today or tomorrow as I know that it would have been made a few days ago.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 20/01/2025 09:35

It will be any that has sushi making in store, our local Waitrose, Tesco and Asda all have them. Prepackaged supermarket sushi is often grim. We also have a small sushi place on our local high street and that wins hands down.
Aldi sushi is an abomination.

Is that the big lettuce wrap? I love that

Angrymum22 · 20/01/2025 09:42

Waitrose sushi counter. Freshly made.

CrystalSingerFan · 20/01/2025 11:29

I always used to feel virtuous when I ate sushi, although I recently discovered that sushi rice is cooked using sugar, presumably to help it stick together. Who knew?
