No one can hurt you like family can

My mum always used to say that to me . "No one can hurt you like family can"

And I think it's true

I'm still upset over a huge argument that me and my cousin had five years ago. We said some very nasty things to each other at the time. She shouted at me until I cried.

We really did have a particularly bad argument. We said nasty things. We really hurt each other. And we never really made up properly after it.

We have tried to talk to each other a couple of times online since then, but we always end up talking about that argument and saying things like "how could you have said that to me"

And we start arguing again. And upsetting each other again. So now we don't speak. We don't live near each other, so we don't see each other.

I was just wondering if someone else had shouted at me until i cried, would I have gotten over it by now.

Why is it when family does it, that it seems to hurt much deeper. Is it because the people you love - can hurt you more because you expect more from them?

My mum said the same . That if she has an argument with a friend, she'll get over it after a while.

But if she has a bad argument with one of her sisters, it really hurts her a lot more.

I was just wondering about this today. What are your thoughts on it

I think it does hurt more. Because you feel so betrayed. I can’t get over how one of my siblings treated me whilst they went through a divorce.

I have seen a different side to her really. The relationship is irreparable as far as I’m concerned. People reframe things to suit their own narrative.

Maybe if you agree some boundaries with your cousin, you might be able to move forward? If it’s a one off argument it might be something you can repair.
