Eight year old temp staying around 40 despite Calpol

Started to get sick this evening. Vomited once. Had the max dose of Calpol four hours apart. Temp staying around 40 when it usually comes down with Calpol. breathing okay. Tired, but it is the middle of the night. Coherent when I asked him something. Has a headache but not tearful over it. Had kept water down. Can’t see any rash.

Anyone with med experience/experience of high temps. Obviously will go to the Dr when they open tomorrow. Not in the UK so don’t have 111.

Thank you.

I recommend alternating Calpol and Ibuprofen.

Ibuprofen works better for fevers for DD.

If their temp doesn't drop an hour after Ibuprofen I think you should seek medical attention. A fever that can't be brought down with usual medicine can be a sign of other, more serious, infection.

Any sign of light sensitivity, stiff neck, getting floppy, difficult to rouse, or the dreaded rash, then seek.medical attention immediately.

Not a doctor, but DD was really suffered with fevers ehen she was small.

ibruprofen

Are you giving dose on the basis of instructions on the box or weight. Better to go by weight (there are lots of reliable online calculators for dose by weight). Also alternate calpol and nurofen.

Calpol based on NHS for age So 375 every four hours, rather than one at 250. It looks slightly higher than the recommended dose by weight. Usually one tablet is enough.

Have a relative with an ibuprofen allergy and DS has had an issue with another med before so I just gave paracetamol at home.

possible red rash on face. Looks a bit like mild sunburn on cheeks. It does fade when pressed.

Temp seems to be down to 39.5 on two thermometers.

I just want to say, it sounds very similar to whatever my DS is getting over.

High fever (104 was the peak, I think), headache, super tired. He then had vomiting for 24 hours.

Calpol didn't help much, Nurofen worked better. I appreciate you're not keen to give this though.

DS was also flushed, so we just gave him a very light sheet and he slept in a shirt and pants.

It's awful when they're unwell :(

Oh and we called 111 who suggested going to urgent care. They were not worried at all, and just gave him some anti sickness as he was throwing up bile by that point.

They did want to know that he could bend his neck, chin to chest. Got asked this a few times. Apparently if this causes pain it can indicate meningitis (as can light sensitivity).

My son just has similar. He’s only 2.5.

He was fine in himself considering so I wasn’t worried. He’s been worse with less temp.

I think it’s just the current flu bug. Very nasty.

Pyjamatimenow · 16/01/2025 00:28

Is it slapped cheek? Agree ibuprofen would bring it down. Calpol doesn’t work much on my DD’s fevers

Kkfkgkkgk · 16/01/2025 00:28

Thank you all.

I feel like I have a tiny child all over again.

Temp has been down to mid 39s for a while. If it was still over 40 was going to take him to hospital, but he is calm, sleeping and not being sick. Has had a few small drinks and kept them down. Was okay about the light being on.

He rarely gets high temps and in the past they have gone down quickly with Calpol.

Definitely a rash on the checks, but it looks like they are flushed and when I pressed with a glass the marks go. No rashes anywhere else and hands/feet warm. Will stay in the room with him and set an alarm for the next possible Calpol dose/probably not sleep.

Thank you all.

Temp down, resting and have a call in to the Dr. Deep cough I want checked is not on the chest.

Previously it has been an easy decision to get medical help or wait. This was so strange as the temp went over 40 and I got the car ready, but they were resting, sipping water and were able to answer a few questions clearly. I didn’t want to haul them out of bed to sit in a hospital waiting room, though so nearly went.

Will update with whatever the Dr advises.

Dr suspected strep, but test negative.

Dr also recommended alternating ibuprofen and paracetamol if temp very high again. Emphasized giving Calpol and ibuprofen based on overall picture, headache/pain etc as well as temp.

Hoping for a better night! Thanks again for replies, was very uneasy seeing those numbers.
