Brown blood starting 13 days before period due

Two days ago (13 days before period is due to start) I started to notice some brown blood when wiping. Didn't really think anything of it, so put on a pad. Now two days later it's getting heavier and yesterday for a time it was a darkish pink. I've had to put a tampon in as this morning when I got up quite a lot came out, but still not really like a period. I've also had a headache for two days. This has never happened before. I'm 46 and am experiencing certain symptoms of perimenopause - predominantly joint pain, sleep disturbance and mood swings, but my period has been ok up until now, although my cycle is a bit shorter by around two/three days. Has anyone else experienced this? Is it normal? It's definitely gone beyond what you would refer to as spotting.

I had it once a couple of months ago. Never had it before and hasn't happened again. I think its just one of those things.

Ye peri can cause all sorts of problems with periods!

unpredictable cycles or longer or shorter cycles being among them.
Some women have none for months then a really heavy one other women I have hear them describe 2 periods a month for ages.
they can be lighter or heavier or longer or shorter. It’s a minefield!

I should say though that bleeding between periods is still something you should check out with a gp as there are other (some serious) things that can be an indicator of.

dont panic though it probably is the menopause but just in case get it checked.

also if you are experiencing symptoms of peri then don’t feel you have to live like that if you want support and possibly hrt then ask for that. So many women just think they have to just put up with these sometimes awful symptoms but that’s just not true for lots of women.
im not pushing, it’s completely up to you obviously but I’m putting it out there in case you haven’t thought about it yet.

Unfortunately I live in Spain where doctors refuse to prescribe HRT. They are very backwards in their thinking on this. I've changed doctors three times to try to find a sympathetic one, but no luck unfortunately. Even the private gynos here are very reluctant to prescribe it and certain wouldn't to anyone who was still having regular periods. Good to know this is probably something and nothing. I'll wait for my period as it's only 11 days away now and see what happens next cycle and if it continues I'll go to my GP.

Ok, good to know. Was it spotting for you or more? It seems spotting is fairly common, but this is definitely more than that, but not like an actual period, more like what you get at the end of a period. Weirdly my period lasted a bit longer than usual this month with the brown blood/discharge at the end lasting two more days than usual.

Yes mine has been all over the place lately, I had a period and then another one two weeks later, then at another point I had a week of a very light period that then stopped and then started again and turned into my actual period. Then i had 5 weeks with no period. I don't know when or what's going to be next tbh.

TheWorldKickedBack · 15/01/2025 11:10

I used to have from teens to my early 30's for about 3 days before my period properly started. It was quite handy actually as I never got caught unawares. Haven't had it since having children. So I believe it's just your hormones changing. However if you are worried then definitely get it checked out.

It was more than spotting, more like a super light extra period. Like not heavy enough to get on underwear but there when I wipe.

Bloody perimenopause!! Looks like I’m in for a lot more of the some of this going forwards. I’ve been lucky with my cycle so far considering how many years I’ve been experiencing the other issues.

Yes I get this mid cycle, typically day 14, so ovulation time. It’s become normal for me now but I also feel headache my and not myself with it too. I’m on low dose HRT and still get this. I’m 46 too.

Dontlletmedownbruce · 15/01/2025 14:46

I went through a phase of getting a second bleed from day 10 to 13 even though my day 1 period was extremely heavy, this was in my early 40s. GP said no need for HRT but put me back on the pill.

I definitely haven't felt like myself which is why I posted and possibly panicked a bit. Looks like this is fairly normal, sadly. I don't even have the option of HRT is pretty shit 😕

I am peri also. But have always had a couple of days of brown blood before a period.

Odd question, but have you ever been told you have a tilted cervix? I was told my issue is because the last bits of period basically get stuck around the rin of my cervix because of the angle it tilts at. For some reason it shifts itself in the run up to my period.

Usually brown blood is not something to worry about as it indicates it is old and not fresh.

If you are worried i would book an appointment just to be safe.
