Is it possible to lose weight on Prednisone?

Gained 12kg over two years. The condition I am being treated for limits exercise - no cardio or strength training.

was 8.5 stone now 10.5. Taking between 5 and 10mg a day.

Help, anything I can do. Will remove any junk from my diet but there isn’t a lot. Peri isn’t helping.

I have Addisons disease so take hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone daily and I’ve lost over 2 stone since mid September by going low carb .

If you are seeing a specialist in the illness, maybe ask to see the dietitian, also if the consultant has any suggestions. They are the expert, maybe have some advice for you

I have a kidney transplant (in 1999), my doctor is great and supportive - so I understand long term illness. It can suck!

I’ve been on it for almost 3 years and managed to gain a stone which I’m slowly losing now, however, it’s only really started coming off since I’ve dropped down to under 20mg. As you know fighting that constant urge to eat is so hard!

I don’t eat any processed food and I’m lucky in that the prednisone has given me back the ability to exercise which definitely helps.

Thank you all. Thanks also for the advice. Inspired to hear weight loss was possible. Frightening how the weight creeps on with the combination of meds and unwilling lifestyle change, though not surprising.

It is a tough road for sure.

My plan is to get down to the min dose possible without a flare up. Cut carbs (all whole grain already) and be stricter about beneficial foods while cutting anything else. Drinking two liters of water a day - was close, but hopefully a bit more will help with hunger pangs.

@Hdhhdhdh go over to the weight loss board and look at the low carb boot camps / recipes etc . You do need to eat highish fat / drink the 2l + to get the benefit of the low carbs .

Thank you, will look out the threads on low carb options.

I am cautious about stomach burns from all the meds. Someone undergoing similar treatment to me had a lot of problems with this issue.
