Strange Title - Astral Projection As A Baby?

This does sound “ out there” but I definitely remember “ flying” as a baby. I hovered at the top of the stairs in my very first home. DM remembers being able to “ fly” all over the house. Is this a thing for anyone else?

Not for me, but I've read that this is a common 'memory' for people to have. If you Google 'memories of flying as a child' there are lots of articles/forum threads about it, it's an interesting phenomenon.

Scrunchcake · 13/01/2025 08:12

Yes, I have this "memory" too - as PP said apparently it's not uncommon. I remember casually mentioning it to my mum when I was around 6yo, "you know how I used to be able to fly...?" I was baffled at first that she just burst out laughing 😆

I'm sure I've seen threads about it here in the past. It's fascinating- I'd love to understand more about it.

Comff · 13/01/2025 08:16

Is it from the feeling of being carried? That makes sense as to why so many people have it surrounding stairs specifically, because a baby would need to be carried up and down stairs until toddling.

I have a weird memory its also flying but I was in my cot and it could fly down the stairs.

dixon86 · 13/01/2025 08:24

Is your name Dalton?

AlteredStater · 13/01/2025 08:25

Hmmm never had that memory but then I grew up in a house without stairs.

Chuchoter · 13/01/2025 08:44

I can't remover when it started in childhood but it went on until I was in my late 20s but when I fell asleep, it felt like I was being lifted up and I could then fly at speed outside and view everything from above as I looked down.

Kaminari · 13/01/2025 08:48

I remember flying over my whole street, looking in everyone's back gardens and whatnot!

What's that in reference too? I had an ex called dalton, always thought it was just a weird made up name, I've never heard it anywhere else.

Stickthatupyourdojo · 13/01/2025 08:51

I remembered flying when I was primary school age. Figured I could probably do it again so I jumped off the sofa and promptly hit the floor face first.

Exactly this!

Balloonhearts · 13/01/2025 09:03

I remember floating down the stairs. The only reason I know it didn't happen is that I was wearing a red dress and I didn't have a red dress.

modgepodge · 13/01/2025 09:03

I’ve also heard it’s our brain misremembering/misunderstanding being carried.

I used to dream I could fly all the time. I loved those dreams and used to wake up believing I could. It was always a massive bolt of reality to realise I couldn't, I also used to try and fly off my sofa but it never worked!

Wow, our brains are wild! This makes total sense from a felt sense memory perspective, thank you. Do you know where you heard this?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 13/01/2025 09:05

It's a common trick of the memory.
What you are actually remembering is being carried downstairs

Needmorelego · 13/01/2025 09:07

@Chuchoter @Kaminari I have had very vivid dreams my whole life where I can fly around like that.
People might say "oh it's just dreams" but how could I know what the world looks like from above before Google Earth was invented 🤔

My late husband had this, and the creepy thing is that he described to someone in the street (bit of a frenemy) a feature in his garden that my husband had not visited, and could’nt have known about without seeing it.

There were photos and videos of the Earth from above before Google! Grin

Needmorelego · 13/01/2025 09:22

@FootstepAway yes but not really of my average small town 70s housing estate 🤔
(or any that I would have seen as a child)

It wasn't until the film Koyaanisqatsi came out in 1982 that I could show people what I meant as there are sequences in the film that are shot from above as if you the viewer are flying.

Luminousalumnus · 13/01/2025 10:20

My dad apparently flew everywhere as a child! He still does now sometimes at age 88. He's a perfectly normal person, not odd in any other regard. I just wish I had inherited it.

Needmorelego · 13/01/2025 10:23

@MirenaM a lot of my dreams are very vivid.
It's hard to explain but they just are.
It's very weird.
