Ever hired a car in Romania?

Anyone ever done this? We're skiing in Feb half term and need to hire a car. There seems to be 2 options-cheap as chip local companies or overpriced more well known companies. We're inclines to try the local companies as they are a fraction of the cost but wondered if anyone had any experience?
Niche question I know! And thanks if anyone has any insight at all.

Driving in Romania is easy but outside of the cities the roads are generally in a poor state so journeys will take a lot longer than you may expect.

Avoid the cheap local companies or if you do go with one of them take out excess insurance before you go. It is almost certain that when you pick it up they will try to sell you an extortionate excess waiver. If you refuse to take it they will find a fault when you return the car and bill your credit card for it. Charging people for paint chips that do not exist is how they are able to offer such low pricing.

I haven’t hired a car in Romania specifically, but I can share some advice based on my experience with car hire. When I needed a vehicle in London, I went with Fleeto, and they were excellent—not just affordable but also incredibly reliable. While they operate in the UK, particularly for PCO car hire and rent to buy cars in London, their approach to customer service and transparency made them stand out.
If you’re considering a local company in Romania, just make sure to read reviews carefully and double-check the terms for deposits and insurance. Sometimes the cheapest option can come with hidden costs. Best of luck with your trip, and enjoy the skiing!
