Eggs in the fridge marked Best Before 7th Jan - would you use them?

Absolutely! I have eaten eggs 3 weeks past their BB date with no ill effects. If you want to be absolutely sure they are safe,do the floating them in a jug of water test. If they sink, they are fine. If they float to the top, they are stale. If they rise halfway up,they are on the turn.

I have a wine rack in my fridge. It currently contains two bottles of kefir and a bag of carrots. 😄

It isn't necessary to keep eggs laid in the UK (or, indeed, most of Europe) in the fridge. It's an American thing (the origins of which I'm not entirely sure of).

And yeah, best before dates on eggs are essentially meaningless.

Apparently (I learned on a thread on MN), it's because they're bleached to clean them which thins the shells, so they're more prone to going off.

You can eat eggs weeks past their use by date.
