Do your cats and dogs like the snow?

Or are they indifferent or even utterly contemptuous towards it? Our cat many years ago quite liked it, I think. It certainly didn't stop him from going outside to spend a penny and sinking up to his belly. He'd jump and scamper about for a while then come back inside. Our spaniels didn't seem to mind and would still go for walks and accompany us sledging. Having quite long feathering meant that lumps of snow would stick to them which they were less keen on. Like the cat, they'd still go out for toilet duties.

There's some good videos on YouTube of dogs sledging with admirable skill. One or two don't even bother to use a sledge!

Our cat sees snow as a personal affront. She picks through it gingerly when she needs to have a wee etc then comes back in complaining as loudly as she can.

My dog adores the snow. He rolls in it and eats it like it's just a big bowl of ice cream.

TheTecknician · 09/01/2025 15:33

I trust Spitz breeds like huskies and malamutes aren't too worried about snow. They're in the wrong job if they are. Likewise St. Bernards and Pyrennean Mountain dogs.

Mine's a husky and he loves it; much better than being in a warm house. He's well insulated so the snow settles on him if he's lying outside.

VeryQuaintIrene · 09/01/2025 15:40

My Annie (RIP) used to go to the front door in the snow, turn away in utter disgust and then trot to the back door to see if it was any different. Held us personally responsible for the disgusting stuff as well.

Golden Retriever here and he is just like this. Running around in crazy circles like he can't believe what's happening. Very entertaining!

Our old cat used to love the snow. Would chase snowballs we threw for here. Or bits of ice 😍

Bjorkdidit · 09/01/2025 15:49

No. We have 6 cats and one went out today for the first time since Sunday - she lasted about 10 minutes - we still have all the snow and freezing temperatures.

Three of the others have also only been out once or twice a day for a few minutes a time, but one is 17 so we'll let her off. Two of them have been out a bit more but not much. Normally they spend a lot of time outside and their litter trays, which are normally barely used, are currently being cleaned hourly, or at least it feels that way.

They have cat flaps at the front and back and are also checking through both to see if the snow is still there and giving us dirty looks because it is. Roll on Sunday when it's expected to start thawing, but then we'll likely have mud Sad.

Our Springer Spaniel loves it but our cats hate it lol

TheTecknician · 09/01/2025 15:55

There's no pleasing some cats. I don't have any but they would like my home at this time of year. I'm two floors up facing west so I get the winter sunshine in the late morning and early afternoon, meaning I don't always need the central heating on. One or two warm and sunny window ledges.

Our boy is quite old now and doesn't love it anymore, he hates the rain as well. He'll be all excited to go out but when he sees the weather his enthusiasm dries up!

CleanShirt · 09/01/2025 15:57

Boy cat screams at the snow, but refuses to touch it.

fivebyfivebuffy · 09/01/2025 15:58

He likes watching it from the comfort of a warm house!

My spaniel loves it, she was born for snow! She runs around like crazy, rolls in it, eats it, wants it thrown at her, all sorts. She gets snowball legs after a while but isn't too bothered unless they get quite big.

My cat hated it. Had to dig out a path down the garden for him once otherwise he wouldn't go out for a pee.

Ohwhatfuckeryitistoride · 09/01/2025 16:01

Our two dogs adore it, the whippet even more than.the foxy. She leaps around like a nutter. Has to have a jumper and coat on and she has dinosaur feet after. Both hate it now its ice. The cat pretends it doesn't exist.

Ours too! And we get urged over to the catflap
and scolded for not arranging better weather.

My lad is a Border Collie. I suspect there is a greater affinity with snow from working breeds - it's in the genes even if not working.

YampyYamYam · 09/01/2025 16:22

Dog: HECK YES BEST DAY EVER

Cat: ugh what have you done to the place

SallyWD · 09/01/2025 16:48

My cat hates it. He zooms outside for a wee then zooms back in.

That's cats and dogs all over

Mine looked at the snow out the window then at me like "you broke it, you fix it"
Me "you don't even go outside!"

shellyleppard · 09/01/2025 17:02

@TheTecknician maybe you could adopt an older cat from a shelter??? They really appreciate the home comforts x

ginasevern · 09/01/2025 17:07

I've had 3 dogs over my lifetime and they've all loved the snow. Like running in circles and excited about it. In fact all the dogs I've ever known have loved it. I've had a cat for 9 years now and he hates it or anything to do with water. He'll stay inside for days until it stops raining - let alone snowing!

Pieceofpurplesky · 09/01/2025 17:25

Cat refuses to go out at all. She has a litter tray in the hall that she only uses when it snows.

TizerorFizz · 09/01/2025 17:29

We used to have a Lhasa Apso. He used to get icy snow forming little balls between his claws. He hated it. So he wasn’t keen on going out. As he got older he didn’t get this problem, so was happy enough to go for a walk.

CortieTat · 09/01/2025 17:30

Our cats are indifferent to it, they go outside in any weather conditions. They are used to snow every year though and grow quite thick, carpet-like fur before winter. They often come home soaking wet when it rains.
