Within an hour of Arbroath

Thinking of moving to Arbroath, Dundee. We want to be rural, ideally no neighbours right next door. It's taking a lot of effort to search on Rightmove. To save myself some hassle, does anyone live locally to this area? Where should I be looking, and where to avoid? Happy to drive half hour or so to the shop. Near water would be lovely, but not essential. I want to be able to go on hikes straight from my front door.

Arbroath or Dundee?

MiddleAgedDread · 08/01/2025 18:13

Also try the TSP (tayside property centre) and zoopla websites, a lot of Scottish solicitors don’t seem to use right move. What you’re looking for is going to be few and far between so it’s quite possible there’s just nothing on the market that meets your requirements!

willsandnoodle · 08/01/2025 18:48

@BellissimoGecko Arbroath, near Dundee.

Do you know the area? There are loads of little rural villages around that area but you would need to come and look around. I don't know it well but we like visiting the area for a day out.

BellissimoGecko · 08/01/2025 19:41

Our I like this one - tspc.co.uk/property/2-Bed-End-Terrace-Bungalow-For-Sale-5-Auchmithie-Arbroath-DD11-5SQ/

TriangleLight · 08/01/2025 19:41

Lovely! I’m from up there and would rate this

BellissimoGecko · 08/01/2025 19:42

Do you know the area at all? I'd come up to see it and look around, see what you think. There are some lovely villages, but some of the towns are a bit ... old-fashioned/sad, with not much on.

ThatAgileCoralBird · 08/01/2025 20:12

second what folk have said about look in TSPC or depending on budget savills/ galbraiths and seen a few rural properties for sale through gilson gray and verdala.
i have family who live rurally in this area.

I like the areas heading towards, Froickheim, Brechin, Montrose and Forfar
Carmyllie (aka Cauld Carmyllie as higher elevation it’s colder but less likely to ever be flooded), Auchmithie (coastal path to Arbroath but can be very busy at times),
Arbirlot (nice village but in a bit of a dip amd near the dual carriageway

monikie and crombie areas are nice but are closer to carnoustie.

TriangleLight · 08/01/2025 20:59

Also look on tayside property online; and Wardhaugh property

PoissonOfTheChrist · 08/01/2025 21:27

It's Arbroath. Never in all my years of living there and in surrounding towns and villages did anyone ever refer to Arbroath as 'Arbroath, Dundee'.

123dogdog · 08/01/2025 21:45

Arbroath is not that close to Dundee, it’d be like saying Livingston, Edinburgh which is a really strange thing to say.

also, why Arbroath? Do you know the area? I wouldn’t willingly move to the Arbroath area. I’m sure a lot of it is lovely, but a lot of it just feels and looks a bit sad and not a whole lot going on tbh (not at all saying all of it, but I feel like it’s a wee bit like the land time forgot or something). And you need to be careful about flooding (well you should be careful about flooding everywhere) as some places flood quite a bit there.

scottish estate agents often don’t use right move, the Aberdeen/shire area very very few are on right move, but the highlands a lot more use right move. I don’t know about tayside area but I would look on tspc.co.uk.

ThatAgileCoralBird · 09/01/2025 07:04

Awh that’s a bit unfair.
Arbroath is quite close to Dundee (30mins) a lot of people commute to Dundee quite a few Dundee businesses have satellite branches in Arbroath.
The new boundary for MP is named as Arbroath and Broughty Ferry.
i would argue that there is a lot going on there, it’s the biggest town in Angus, the only one to have two secondary schools. Arbroath infirmary has minor injuries unit and maternity units. Great fish and chips at the harbour, Webster’s Theatre, youth music festival in spring, good walks, a cinema and a further education college. Quite a choice of supermarkets too.

yes it feels a bit tired in places but don’t most towns at the moment.

ThatAgileCoralBird · 09/01/2025 09:23

It’s also got a parkrun which I was thinking of doing.

mitogoshigg · 09/01/2025 09:27

Had a rather nice lunch of fish and potatoes once ... lovely small town. We are usually heading to the ferry at Aberdeen so haven't stayed overnight but were thinking of doing so next time to save the panicked drive to make Aberdeen by 3pm.

I don't get a notification when someone has commented, so didn't realise until just now when I searched this post. Is there a way to change that?

Roughly, we have family in Arbroath but we aren't fussed about being in that exact area. Within 30 mins/ an hour would be ideal

I'm ever so sorry I got that bit wrong. I should have said it differently for you. My thought process was that Dundee was the closest, widely recognisable area for reference. I didn't think too deeply about it

Thank you for all who commented, and my apologies for not replying before as this has been really helpful.
We are wanting near Arbroath to be near family. Not specifically Arbroath which is why I have asked for some suggestions.

We will have one primary aged child, so would ideally like to be on or near a school bus line.

We have been to Arbroath on many occasions, and explored the area, but not in a house hunting way. Mumsnet is great for suggestions from people who live there, that I can use for starting points for our search. So thanks!

Go to your settings, then tap Notifications and change it there.

@BellissimoGecko than you! I've done that now
