So there is a house I pass twice a day on the school run. It's a few streets away from me.

I don't know the couple who live there but I often see them in the front garden in the spring and summer, we normally wave hello, they are I guess in their 80s and both look fairly frail

Anyway today I was walking past the house when I dropped my glove so I bent down to pick it up, as I stood I was eye height with their front window. I saw a huge rat run along the window still

I so worried now. I can't really knock on the door and say something. I don't know them past a nodding hello and wave.

Would social services be interested or is that massively overstepping

Do you mean it was inside the house?

Are there any signs of activity in the house?

I’d be tempted to call social services (or 101 if no signs of activity) and ask for a welfare check.

Yes inside the house. Along the inside widow ledge.

Yes lights on in house.

I agree

Maybe a call to adult social services / police welfare visit.

It could be a pet rat perhaps they have younger family staying with them
They could have fallen / died leaving the light on - keep an eye on whether it switches off again.

Go onto your local council website and search for adult Social Services. If you get no joy with them, then I’d try Age Concern.

And good for you for not just ignoring it.

AwaitingFreedom · 08/01/2025 13:33

Inside? Hell yes. Ask the police for a welfare check citing your concerns.

Tinselinthewhoopsiebasket · 08/01/2025 13:33

Ask the police to do a welfare check today.... I reported an incident when on holiday. And elderly man with 8 ddogs living alone. The ddogs were going absolutely nuts... The police attended within 15 mins.

Yes completely brown

I'm going to call 111 and ask for a welfare check. Better safe than sorry

Yes report it to the council, they should send out the pest control, two houses down from me had rat infestation in the house & roof & Foxes under their garden shed, both were in their 90s.
