Got the flu on holiday- what medicine can help?

Im in on holiday (Fuerteventura so a Spanish island) and my partner has flu.
We couldn’t buy codeine over the counter.
We have bought co-codamol over the counter in the UK before.

Can anyone suggest anything more effective than paracetamol that we can buy in Spain over the counter, without seeing a doctor?

I don't know, sorry, but what I would do is go to a pharmacy and ask the pharmacist for an over the counter flu medication.

I think you will be limited to ibuprofen and paracetamol. Alter them regularly.

Go to the pharmacy and ask them (I'm assuming he's not well enough to go himself).

Spanish pharmacies are excellent and seem to have a wide variety of medication they can sell over the counter without a doctor's prescription (or perhaps it's the pharmacist that's doing the prescribing). There also seems to be loads of them, and I would expect that in somewhere like Fuerteventura, you'd find someone who speaks English if you don't speak Spanish.

Perhaps related to the above, they don't seem to have even simple painkillers in supermarkets there.

Thank you. I’m going to go back as he seems much worse now. Earlier they would only give paracetamol equivalent and Enandol (like an ibuprofen)

I would try and get a doctor's appointment. If he is needing stronger medication than paracetamol and ibuprofen, then that doesn't sound like "normal" flu - he may have something else going on.

Flu can be very serious, if you think your DP is getting worse I would recommend seeing a Doctor. They may prescribe antivirals if he is very poorly. Otherwise, fluids, and paracetamol and ibuprofen.Hope you don’t catch it!

Thank you for your kind help. I think I’ll leave him a few more hours and possibly reassess in the morning unless he goes more downhill from here.
