What do you think will change in the next 50-100 years?

Dh and I were chatting yesterday about how much has changed in the UK post war.

Thinking of things like house building, shopping habits, travel, technology.

There has been a huge advancement in technology since the 80s/90s.

Any predictions on how things might look in another 50-109 years?

I am scared that it will look hot, wet, violent, hungry, expensive all thanks you climate change - which is already changing the world in those ways

and add a dollop of antibiotic resistance

We may laugh at brexit when we end up controlled by one of the big nations ( at a guess China )

The super rich will be ok. I doubt anyone I here will be ok

Well if you ask my early 20s kids, they will say civilisation will definitely end by then. They back it up with lots of facts, but I zone out.

Optigan · 06/01/2025 18:07

I think we'll see huge advances in AI and virtual reality.

I think food supplies will become short due to droughts / fires / floods
I think people from the areas impacted will try to come to countries not impacted and it will cause friction and wars
I I think certain animals and plants will go extinct causing problems in the food chain too
Possibly another pandemic , I’ve always thought as it gets hotter and wetter , mosquitoes will move further north possibly mutating some deadly mega malaria
Basically lots of doom and gloom…
We have moved on so much in tech and innovation but it will be something natural / to do with nature etc I think will cause catastrophic events.

I read all the bad stuff and I think ok but - humans are great problem solvers and I think in the long run that problem solving nature will win out.
So my prediction is - you know Star Trek? That.

ElsaGreen · 06/01/2025 19:50

Mass extinction events, wars and migration due to climate change.

It is unlikely the world will be habitable to humans in 100 years

Unfortunately this. Within 50 years max.
I am hopeful that technology and innovation will offset some of the worst, but it will still be bad
We may live in an area where we can still live under the changing climate. But the knock on impact in other countries will massively impact us.

Facts about the future? It will be interesting to revisit those assumptions in 10-20 years' time.

I think property prices may finally drop as the volume of people in the world reduce… given smaller families… we may value things like fresh food a lot more and it will feel and be expensive due to issues like climate change… AI will make our lives easier and we may have more robots / experiences in entertainment etc jobs we have now may not exist…
Maybe a move to renting and diff work and living values may emerge…

BlackeyedSusan · 06/01/2025 21:15

Food will be more expensive. (Climate change)
Housing more difficult to buy. (Climate migration)
We'll wonder why we ever drove petrol cars
We'll have heat pumps not gas boilers.
People will look at our generation with horror at what we did to the world.(Though more likely the previous two.)
I'll be dead.

Luminousalumnus · 06/01/2025 21:18

Loss of low lying coast UK
Greater divide between rich and poor UK
No free health care UK
No social security UK
Much more self and family reliance and personal responsibility UK
Worldwide increasing absolute poverty with huge migrations stamped on by richer countries
Less democracy and more power in the hands of big companies and rich entrepreneurs and oligarchs
