christmas dinner with inlaws
found a worm in my meat (goose) Envy

didn't look too closely to exactly identify tbh

usually tend to find maggots in fresh veg/fruit, organic innit maybe that's my super power?

oh, and don't look too closely at the battered fish - that's often full of worms and fish lice

Never

LightUpMyStars · 04/01/2025 22:25

What's all this?? I've never found anything like that in my food.. and (seeing as it sound like a fairly common occurrence for you) I'm not so sure if that's a good or a bad thing 🤢😆

But seriously, it's really a common thing to find worms and lice in battered fish?? ...how do they survive being cooked in hot oil?

NoSpecialCharacter · 04/01/2025 22:28

Caterpillar in my organic broccoli. My guts haven’t been the same since.

How do they survive? They're not alive, but you still wouldn't want to eat them would you?

LightUpMyStars · 04/01/2025 22:29

Come to think of it, you probably meant dead worms didn't you OP not heat resistant super worms 😅

But how big are fish lice, are they easy to spot? I've never heard of them and don't want to google 🤢

LightUpMyStars · 04/01/2025 22:30

Yes @BadgersGalore
I'm a bit slow, I thought of that after I posted.

OzCalling · 04/01/2025 22:31

Found a wasp burnt into the bottom of my freshly made pizza in the summer 🤢

At least you didn't find half a wasp I suppose 😅

Ginkypig · 04/01/2025 22:33

I have often found tiny spiders when I get little gems so now I don’t buy them

AyrnotAir · 04/01/2025 22:34

About 10 years ago in Lanzarote had a caterpillar on my lettuce in a restaurant.

DaftyLass · 04/01/2025 22:35

I brought a snail home with my lettuce from the farmers market, thank goodness I rinse

KohlaParasaurus · 04/01/2025 22:35

A small snail in a can of vegetable soup, around 30 years ago. If it had been in my bowl I'd just have swallowed it and said nothing, but it landed in the portion I served to a lunch guest who was vegetarian.

DurhamDurham · 04/01/2025 22:36

Blooming heck. I went off meat last summer, I still eat fish so I'm loathe to google fish lice and worms or that'll be the end of that too.

goingtotown · 04/01/2025 23:11

Found a feather in a tin of chicken soup.

bloodredfeaturewall · 04/01/2025 23:11

fish worms and lice are really common.
good thing they taste the same as their host as far as I'm aware

as long as the food is cooked well they are not harmful.

OP posts:
bloodredfeaturewall · 05/01/2025 09:56

I couldn't eat broccoli for a while as it was my chore to collect caterpillars from them and feed them to the chickens.
I rarely got them all and even after washing sometimes they got cooked

Rattai · 05/01/2025 09:59

Worms in cod...I could never eat it after that
They look like thin white string btw

Anewuser · 05/01/2025 10:04

I ate half a small carrot cake so put the remainder back in the box. It was cardboard so not sealed.
The following day opened the box to find an enormous spider in there.
Haven’t been able to buy another since.

I know I should have just eaten the whole cake on the first day.

PollyannaWhittier · 05/01/2025 10:08

I had a romaine lettuce absolutely crawling with aphids a few weeks ago.

The one that's seared into my memory happened when I was about 12, on holiday in France. My parents bought me a whippy ice cream from a cafe / bar by the beach, I noticed there was a wasp on the nozzle of the machine but my parents didn't believe me and yelled at me for being ungrateful and a drama queen until I ate it. Lo and behold, when I nearly finished it there was a massive dead wasp in the bottom of the cone Sad

ConflictofInterest · 05/01/2025 10:09

A lot of tiny slugs in the cauliflower last week. It had been in the fridge for about a week too so I had to check everything to be sure they hadn't crawled into anything else. But then I have an allotment so can only blame myself. I find creatures in my veg most of the time. I'd rather that than eat pesticides though, that will be worse for your insides and you can't even see them to avoid them.

JustGotToKeepOnKeepingOn · 05/01/2025 10:26

I've never found anything in my food.
