This is Reform's amendment to the Bill that will provide more protection for children. It won't go anywhere but is a wrecking amendments.

That this house declines to give a second reading to the children’s wellbeing and schools bill because the secretary of state for the Home Department has not launched a UK-wide public inquiry into grooming gangs and has not committed to updating Members of this House every quarter on the progress of the inquiry.

Have Reform ever commented on the Jay Inquiry recommendations?

They actually called it the “Home Department”? I know some of them have only been MPs for five minutes but really?

itsgettingweird · 08/01/2025 12:13

Home department sounds like something you'd find in a supermarket!

itsgettingweird · 08/01/2025 12:14

Also want to say thank you for the Andrew Norfolk link. Very interesting and it's very pertinent that it recognises people won't even focus on the truth and will politicise for their gain anyway whatever is done and said.

Maybe they used ChatGP to write it?

Or it's a Grauniad typo?

bombastix · 08/01/2025 12:19

@BIossomtoes - I don't know if I am being unfair but the text doesn't work though I know the rule is never to criticize an amendment for drafting or legal certainty I think these conventions might be tested!

cardibach · 08/01/2025 12:20

Badenoch is really irritating in PMQs, just repeating the same nonsense and not recognising that her amendment will wreck the Bill and harm children. Nothing to prevent her still agitating for a further inquiry after it goes through. Starmer is good - obviously passionate and explaining really well why he wants themBill to go through and trying to show that the amendment is cynical politicking.

It's what AI would call the Home Office.

SerendipityJane · 08/01/2025 12:23

Badenoch is really irritating in PMQs,

Last two words weren't needed.

DuncinToffee · 08/01/2025 12:25

I watched the bit between Starmer and Badenoch, on silent with subtitles, the Tory bench didn't look too convinced, they well know that they didn't do anything after the ISSCSA inquiry reported.

Despicable twats, as always.

DuncinToffee · 08/01/2025 12:31

Keir Starmer says Kemi Badenoch in eight years as an MP never mentioned grooming gangs in the House of Commons - not once - even when she was children’s minister Badenoch insists she has raised the issue “in speeches” but is unable to deny the charge

OP posts:
cardibach · 08/01/2025 12:32

Badenoch also said Starmer was wrong to say that they hadn’t enacted any of the IICSA recommendations, saying they accepted all of them. That’s just a lie. Accepting isn’t enacting. They didn’t enact.

DuncinToffee · 08/01/2025 12:33

Starmer is asking the Tory backbenches not to vote against a bill helping to protect vulnerable children, will they?

Starmer was very, very restrained. He could have gone for Badenoch's jugular, but he didn't. She on the other hand dripped some poison.

She said she'd made speeches about the grooming gangs scandal. I don't believe her. Perhaps she made mention of it in a speech or two.

Starmer went into a bit too much detail about what he did as DPP. I understand why, though.

Cheguevarahamster · 08/01/2025 12:34

Starmer was very good. Kemi not so much. Had a quick look at Hansard and you can see that Badenoch has not spoken up about the issue. (neither has Jenrick)

Jess Phillips (as a tireless campaigner and advocate) spoke at committee in January 2024, noting that "I am pleased that the Minister leaned on it being a year on from the child abuse inquiry—not one of whose recommendations, I think it is fair to say, has yet come to fruition. Well, hope springs eternal for this year! There are plenty of recommendations for the Government to crack on with in this regard, and I look forward to seeing some sort of timeline from the Home Office of any progress in that particular area"

The hypocrisy form the Tory party is astounding.

She thinks we are too thick to tell the difference between accepting and acting.

bombastix · 08/01/2025 12:38

Awful. Badenoch was dire. Her amendment is a mistake. I do wonder how much she consulted her colleagues.

I too thought many of the Tories hearts were not in it. She gave a morally crummy performance and wants to follow it up with this amendment. Awful.

PandoraSox · 08/01/2025 12:41

Quick search of Hansard. Not sure how accurate its search function is, but:

Was that Starmer? If so he’s on fire.

Searched "gangs" and to be fair she does mention gangs. But not grooming gangs.

Yep.

bombastix · 08/01/2025 12:50

Yes. He absolutely minced her. I mean she was awful. Her integrity is on the floor. Who would vote for that? She makes Farage look like Churchill.

I will be watching the polls. The Conservatives are declining.

DuncinToffee · 08/01/2025 12:50

PandoraSox · 08/01/2025 12:49

Yep.

Indeed, appealing to the Tory benches

I'm looking across. I know there are hon mem on the benches opposite who know very well that what's in this bill is necessary... I urge them to think twice about following this short sighted, misguided, bandwagon-jumping approach of the non-leadership of the leader of the opposition."
